Family Railcard for £10 (Half Price)

What's this about?
It's possible to buy the Family Railcard for £10, half the normal price of £20. The railcard lasts 12 months and gives a third off many adult fares and 60% off childrens' fares throughout Great Britain.
To use the railcard at least one child and one adult must travel although up to four adults and four children can go, plus there's no need for them all to be related. For the purposes of the family railcard a child is aged between 5 and 15 years.
This means even if you're just doing one big journey in the year in these conditions, the purchase price of the ticket should easily be saved.
What should I do?
Simply go to the Family Railcard website, complete the application form and in the promotional code box enter either of these two codes: FRACXG10 or FREXPN10. Offer ends 31 October (Having been in touch with National Rail it has now approved the use of these codes)
Are there any restrictions on use?
The railcard can't be used during peak times Monday to Friday if the journey is entirely in the London or Southeast area.
One advantage of the card (as pointed out by MoneySavers below) is it also has a discount offers scheme for certain hotels & trips.
Any other ways to save on train fares
Yep, just read the Cheap Train Tickets article
PS This post has been added to the discussion to give a more detailed researched summary. Thank you very much to MoneySaver bella4uk for starting it off (see below).

Why do they make you register before they will tell you the price? Or even what discount you get.
(a long time ago it used to be 33% off plus children travel for £1 so cheaper for 2 to travel than 1 on most journeys)There is no intelligent life out there ... ask any goldfish!0 -
I forgot to renew my free one with the mail. I am glad I did now as its only cost £10 now.0

Aiming to pay of £30k from my mortgage between Dec '09 and Dec '120 -
Thanks for that. I got a half price one even though my current one doesn't expire till December. If I now renew around the same date for the next couple of years I'll get extra value for money, since my DS's birthday is 21st Oct but a family railcard purchased before he turns 16 will still entitle us to discounts for the rest of the year even if he's 16 for most of it!0
