Whatever happens to the exchange rate I'm still emphasizing the $ returns as those are what I spend. The volatility of currency is not something I'd want to play a large part in a portfolio

I completely agree with you, however if you invest globally and are located in the UK your returns are effectively dollar based. The comparison is offered for information only. The reader can discard or use the information at their discretion.
