Just caught up on your savings diary and I’m so impressed by the progress you’ve made since the beginning. Bookmarked and looking forward to seeing even more progress :)

I’m also from the north east & a cat lover!
Just recently got into couch to 5k and it’s amazing to see you now running half marathons as I remember your post saying you were starting C25K. Hopefully that will be me one day.

do you have any tips for growing veg etc? I’m hopeless with even keeping houseplants alive but would love to grow my own potatoes, garlic, onions etc. did you learn from a video or just trial and error? :)

    all the best x
    Hello!

I'm currently training for my first full marathon after the aborted attempt last year :) I think I prefer distance over speed. Just keep at it, it gets easier pretty quicky.

Honestly, the veg growing has mainly been from online tips and trial and error. I got some excellent compost from my bin this year that I've planted my onion seedlings in. Hopefully they'll do well.

    Quick savings/mortgage update:

    Investments                                    £300
    Mortgage ovps so far                     £975
    House Emergency£4,000.00
    Bathroom/Moving Sinking Fund  £2,551.26
    Emergency Fund    £7,000.00
    Holidays   £600.07

That is amazing. Good luck with your training :) I get what you mean, I finished W3 R1 the other day and even running for 3mins seemed unachievable at the beginning. I used to be a sprinter so preferred speed over distance but since starting the programme my mindset has definitely shifted and I get a better sense of accomplishment from C25K.

We'll be virtually cheering you on from the sideline 😄

Keep up the veg growing as there's a vast taste difference with home-grown.

Plant update as it's been ages!

Garlic: Great harvest, I'll be planting one of the saved bulbs this weekend. It's come around very quickly.

Onions: Considering I grew them from seed, I think these did great. Not especially big, but I did get plenty of reasonable sized ones. I've got seed left over so I'll have another go next year.

French Beans: Not great, some pests kept getting at them. Not a huge harvest.

    Strawberries, chillies: nada.

On a more positive note, I've overwintered last year's poinsettia and it's looking positively radiant.

Marathon update: Did it on a heatwave and the race ended up getting cancelled part way through. Ended up finishing just before the cut off, but at least I finished!

I'll be back with a financial update on payday :)
  • Too early for garlic, it's the end of next month.
Birds, slugs and earwigs are the common eaters. Cage or net them next year and it will help.
Well done for running, it's hard enough during normal weather.

Investments                                    £280 paid in, £20 bonus from the platform
    Mortgage ovps so far                     £2085.00
    House Emergency£4,000.00
    Bathroom/Moving Sinking Fund £2,891.26
    Emergency Fund  £7,000.00
    Holidays £104.79

Investments right down, I haven't added any more into it for a while, choosing to focus on overpaying the mortgage instead.

The holidays fund I'm now just using as a general sinking fund as I'm not planning any more trips any time soon. I used some of it to replace my knackered old laptop- got a great deal on a new one, too.

Figures are looking good. The instant satisfaction of knowing there's more house owned by you can't be beaten 😀
