  • I think it's what Verbatim said, that all the guarantors would be 'jointly and severally liable'. But I'm not at all happy about signing an agreement like that :(.

Unfortunately DS3 does have his heart set on this house. It is a lovely house right next to the campus and at this stage it may be too late for him to find another good house to rent as they get snapped up quickly :(.

I would prefer the option of him borrowing £3000 from his brother and paying six months rent in advance. As long as DS2 was willing to lend it to him. He can certainly easily afford it as he has enough money in his account to pay off our mortgage (DH caught sight of his bank statement recently!)

I had a good day of volunteering and work overall. It was a wet break time but a dry time lunch time today. The weather is so changeable!

But I think that the colleague who is training me in my lunch time job has been in the job too long, is a bit slapdash and is encouraging me to to not do the job properly :(. So I've decided to rely upon my own instincts and common sense and do what I think is the right thing. She has been in the job for many years and can perhaps afford to cut corners. I however am still on probabion and I need to do the job properly and conscientiously. I'm positive that I'm right.

The TA whose class I volunteer in, however, is a very positive and helpful influence and has offered to teach me some things which I will need to know to become a TA :T. So I stayed for an extra half hour after my lunchtime job to watch and learn while she did an important part of her job. I helped to repay her by doing lots of her filing this morning :).

This afternoon when I got home I did another two hours of work on my assignment. I am officially knackered now, but I think that I'm about two thirds of the way through it, so I should be able to finish it early next week before my third tutorial next Friday :T. I've written 3,800 words now so far.

Definitely go by your own instincts when it comes to your job, people who slack off and cut corners think that no one notices but they normally do notice but make allowances for people because they have been there a long time,it doesn't do that persons reputation and credibility much good though,it really annoys me when people teach new staff members to cut corners,it's not fair on the new staff member and it breeds an air of indifference about the job
I must admit I have times in my job when I am not at my best but I still like to keep my standards up because people do notice

Thanks OBL. I'm naturally a very conscientious and hard working person, but the colleague I mainly work with has been there for many years and I personally think she takes advantage of this fact. This week I feel she has been encouraging me to cut corners. As she is more experienced than me and is telling me how to do the job, I think I have listened to her on a couple of occasions and then felt that I could have done my job much better by doing it a different way. I feel like she is encouraging me to cut corners and slack off a bit. I want to get on with her but I also want to do my job properly.

So today I made the decision that whilst I will do my very best to get on well with her, I will not allow her to influence me to be less consciencious or efficient when I'm doing my job. For example she is often a bit late starting, so if I go down with her then I am late too. She dilly dallies in the dining room looking after three or four children and encourages me to do the same, when we should be patrolling the playground looking out for all of the children :(. I actually feel quite cross about it  well more cross with myself for listening to her :(.

So I'm going to follow my instincts and common sense from now on and do my job to the very best of my ability, even if it means going against her advice. Like I said, I'm still on probation so I need to follow the rules to the letter. And this is what I would actually feel much happier doing because I'm a very conscientious person who likes to do my best at all times.

  • Tomorrow I have volunteering again in the morning and then my lunchtime job.

I won't stay late tomorrow, because we've arranged to go out with aunt and uncle tomorrow afternoon. But next week I'm going to stay late most days so that I can learn a part of the TA's job that I don't come across enough :).

I'm going to do an easy dinner tonight because I feel very tired, but I feel like I have a clear path ahead of me that I want to follow, with my volunteering, course and teaching from the TA, which will hopefully lead me into the job I want :).

It's tiring but exciting. It feels like the right thing for me on a gut level and it's also a great distraction from some of the negative family events that have been happening recently.

I think you are right about following your insticts and doing a good job. Its hard because you want to get on with others but you are right that you are on probation and if I'm right looking to be employed as a ta in future so need a positive reference - sounds like you are doing a great job on all fronts!

  • Thanks Earthgirl :).

It is hard to go against the advice of a very experienced colleague when I'm new in the job, but I just know that sometimes what I want to do is the right thing and that she is encouraging me to cut corners. So I'm definitely going to use my own judgement from now on.

I'm not saying she's wrong all of the time, or even most of the time, but if what she's advising me to do doesn't sit right with me, then I'm going to go with my own common sense and do what I think is right.

Agree, you may be new in this job but you have buckets of common sense and experience and also have values re whats right for you and what you are comfortable with so deffo go with your gut :D

I guess if your colleague challenges it you could find a way to keep the peace maybe by saying you thought you'd go outside as she was taking care of the children that are indoors or something??
