I don't have any family or friends with young children, I only know people with teenagers or grown up children that live locally. I could try mentioning it to my colleagues. Thanks INOD :).

  • The vat registration wasn't just to impress customers Carboot (it was to give the impression that we were a larger and more successful business), we can claim back the vat that we pay on business expenses, like paper, printer ink, business cards and our accountants bill. We don't provide services to individuals, we provide services to businesses, many of whom are vat registered.

However we buy less business related goods and services than we used to, and it would save our smaller non vat registered customers 20% as we won't have to charge them vat. We will no longer be able to claim back the vat we pay on our own business expenses, but it will save us getting fines for late payments and our accountants bill may possibly be cheaper as they won't have to check our vat returns. It would also save us having to buy the new sofware and learn how to use it.

The vat issue is fairly complex, but I think de-registering is right for us at this time.

I did go fo my Saturday saunter thank you :).

I'm really sorry if my previous post about the VAT came over as judgemental. Not my intention at all:o

I appreciate that there are pluses and minuses to being VAT registered and I'm sure you and OH have done what's best for your current situation. There'll certainly be less hassle no longer having to do the returns especially as there'd new software to buy and learn how to use.

My comment about 'impressing customers' stems from something you said a while ago. I'm sure you used that same phrase which is why I followed up on it. Sorry if I misquoted you:o

I've been putting my foot in it with other people too today, all totally unintentional:eek:.

Carboot you haven't put your foot in it at all :naughty:. Sorry if I gave you the impression that you had :o.

I did mention impressing customers but I didn't explain what I meant by it (which was pretending to be a bigger company than we are) so I can see how you wouldn't see what I was on about .

So it's my fault for not explaining it properly :).

If you were really keen on the idea of babysitting how about a notice in the local playgroup - the type that mums stay with their children, health centre, the newsagents, church, local community magazine if you have one. That sort of thing? If you work in a school, maybe their newsletter, although not sure I'd be happy with crossing that line - but I bet the parents wouldn't dare come back late ;)

Not sure of rules and regulations about being paid for looking after children these days either, but you can bet your bottom dollar there'll be some :o xx

I did wonder whether you have to be a registered childminder unless you're doing it for friends and family. There seem to be rules and regulations for everything now. My sister in law is a registered child minder and she has to go on loads of courses, be inspected etc. I don't think school would want to put it in their newsletter, as they save that for important school announcements :).

I don't even think you can be paid for looking after children of friends and family if you do it more than 2 hours a day without being registered. But don't quote me on that, somebody else will be more up to date with rules and regs. xx
  • I have a feeling I've heard that too TF2. It's ridiculous not even being able to do it for friends and family . What difference does it make if it's free or paid? It's probably just because they want to tax you on the income . I bet loads of people do it on the QT.
