Thanks Cumbria :). I feel slightly less stressed since I remembered DH's sister in law is a lawyer. We're the poor relations :(.

I feel terrible now. I thought I was helping by posting that Citizens Advice link but all I did was spread gloom and uncertainty:o

Good idea to ask SIL's advice:T. I was going to suggest consulting someone at your local Citizen's Advice but if they're anything like my nearest one they're so busy and the appropriate person to deal with specific issues isn't available for days:eek:. I expect once you receive the agreement that you'll have to act fairly quickly. You wouldn't want someone else snapping up the house that DS has set his heart on.

Whatever happens, please don't worry. I know you and DH will do the right thing for all concerned:A

P.S. Don't forget you may be the 'poor relations' as far as income goes but there are lots of things in life far more valuable than money. You have those in spades.

Just as an extra thought, IF your SIL agrees that the form is ok to sign, ask her if it is worth you making double sure that you are only liable for his part of the rent, by writing "only for the rent of son" by your signature.
Another thing I have seen is that the utilities are often not paid, and the utility company will chase anyone they can find who is named on the bill, so if he is with others who may not pay, it could be worth him not being named on the bill as a just in case. He can still pay his part of the bill directly by quoting the reference number, but will not be billed later on if the others fail to pay.

I'm so pleased to hear that you got the tax rebate Hairy! Well done!:j

Haven't any help to give re. the guarantor business I'm afraid though as when DD was at uni she actually stayed in halls the whole time because she managed to wangle a job in helping the domestic bursar. She preferred it as the cheap area that most of the students ended up flat/house sharing was so awful.

Surrey is nice thought but unfortunately one of the most expensive counties in the UK. I hope it all works out for DS3.

Popping I to say hi, love your diary HH, glad you got your tax rebate!

We had to ask my Mum to guarantor my daughter when she moved to private accommodation for Uni as we live outside of the UK. Big thing to have to ask, ultimately we would have paid though, not let it to my Mum.

They had someone stop paying for their rent mid tenancy and it was taken out of the remaining 5's deposit along with any damages/redocoration that were in communal areas. Any damages to their own bedroom was taken out of their personal deposit. £500 without bills really isn't bad unfortunately, student landlords make a killing.

Encourage your son not to put his name on the utilities, just to pay someone his share each month. He'll end up having to chase everyone for the money each month and could easily end up out of pocket despite how good friends he may be with everyone. 1st year or of halls was a huge leading curve for my DD.
  • Hope you have a good day HH

Don't feel terrible Carboot, you WERE helping :). We need to know what we may be getting into so I'm very glad that you posted the link :).

As you say I think the CAB would take a long time as they're so busy, so IF we're accepted as guarantors, which is by no means certain, we'll read the small print carefully and then send it to SIL to check over.

Thanks Susie :). Adding that by the signature is a really good idea. We'll also tell him NOT to put the utilites in his name. Good advice :).
