  • I'm so happy for you and DH finally receiving your tax refund:j:beer:. With all that you've already done with it and plan to do with it in the weeks ahead it must have been one heck of a refund:eek:. I'm really happy for you that you were able to renew your NT membership with it as I know visiting NT places gives you a lot of pleasure. Now you can relax, it's been a stressful wait:beer:

What a pity that among all the joy about getting the money you've had the worry about the guarantor situation:(. Sorry,I don't know much about credit checks for guarantors. I just know that the sooner I have a clean credit file the better just in case I ever need to be credit checked for anything. As you say, you have never had the things that they're mainly concerned about (bankruptcy, CCJs and IVAs) and despite your DH not earning a huge amount he's a reliable person running his own business. That must count for a lot:beer:. WannabeFree says rental agencies aren't able to see your whole file with the defaults so it looks as if everything will be alright on that score:j.

I can understand that you're concerned in case DS has problems paying his rent. It's a big responsibility being a guarantor. Please make sure you go over everything with a fine tooth comb before you sign anything.
  • Hmm.. in regards to the Guarantor situation, please make sure you triple check everything before you sign.. Perhaps Citizens Advice could help with any unknown niggles?
I remember watching a “can’t pay..take it away” episode where a family had the real possibility of having to sell their house to pay off a guarantor debt (& it was from another family member) Also if it is shared housing then I’d worry about being liable for the household..
Bless you HH.. I’m soo pleased you’ve done the financial jig with the Tax repayment.. happy you found your blue jeans & make sure you & your DH have a small treat.. you deserve it!;)

    Thanks MadamMim :).

That's exactly what I'm worried about :( I don't want to be liable for the whole house because it is shared housing :(.

The rental agency are going to email us an agreement to sign (if we pass the credit checks I suppose!) and we'll read all the small print very carefully before we decide whether to sign it or not.

We can't be liable for anyone else's rent other than DS3's of course, and we can't even afford to cover his rent, but he is (usually) quite careful with money.

  • HH, I've just had a bit of a scout round and found this:

    https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/housing/renting-a-home/student-housing/students-in-private-rented-accommodation/student-housing-using-a-guarantor/

It's by Citizens Advice. There's some info on guarantors and shared accommodation part way down the page.

Hope it helps a bit x

  • I've messaged DS3 and told him we need to do a video chat with him BEFORE we sign anything, because we need to ask him for more information, like are his house mates being guaranteed by their parents.
