Here’s hoping it clears overnight for you HH.. you were correct when you said that when they want tax/monies owed it has to be immediate payment yet a refund is oooh so slow to matrerialise!

I can see why burning your mum's furniture would have upset you Carboot :(. It's a bit old fashioned I suppose so nobody wants to have dark wood unless it's a valuable antique.

Yes, I can understand that the furniture wasn't either stylishly modern or antique but when the man phoned me he wanted all sorts of information about the exact dimensions and so on. I emailed him some photos too so he knew exactly what he was getting. The way he was talking suggested he wanted to use it as furniture not firewood. It was too good for that, really good quality and had been lovingly cared for and polished for about 50 years.

The only reason we realised he was going to burn it was when OH helped him carry everything to his van and help to load it. OH was trying to manoeuvre everything into the van so as not to scratch the wood and the collector said something like, oh don't bother about that, I'm going to chop it up anyway, it's only for the woodburner. OH wasn't going to tell me that as he thought it would upset me but I could see the man just shoving the items into the van without taking any care and I asked OH why he hadn't helped him to load the things carefully. He said the man hadn't wanted him to and then he explained why.

I was annoyed that on the phone the man had asked me all sorts of questions about the furniture dimensions as I imagined he wanted to make sure they'd fit in the places he intended to put them in his house or to make sure they'd go through his door. I suppose he just wanted to make sure he could get them all in his van.

I enjoyed volunteering this morning so I think that's going to be a nice way to start the week from now on :). I've got Pilates this evening too so it's going to be a busy day which is good :).

I'm glad you enjoyed the volunteering:T. Do you always work with the same class?

Sorry to hear you're still waiting for the tax refund:( but it looks as if it's imminent. Fingers crossed for a very pleasant surprise in your bank account in the morning:j

  • Yes it's more than we expected so it will pay all our outstanding VAT, our accountants bill, and will leave two week's living expenses :). Which is good as we don't have much work on at the moment.
