Weld exhaust flange

Also be aware that electric welding on the vehicle can screw up sensitive electronic components.
Best take all those off too and put them next to the petrol tank at the bottom of the garden.0 -
Yep agree not worth my life
How do garages do it though?
They do it while on car0 -
Just cut the flange out and join the two pipes with an overlapping joiner like I said in post 4. You are making such a drama out of something so simple.
I've seen a garage completely destroyed by a welding incident; car went up and the entire garage business went too; if that answers your previous question. Normally they would use oxy-acetaline which is more controlled than arc or Mig.0 -
makes sense.
I agree it is a simple task and whilst I am finiding time to have a go at it, I am asking questions I had in mind.
I am going to remove it from car and weld it using mig.
Would you paint it after removing rust or that doesn't help really ?
i suppose it gets exteremly host and paint will be destroyed in first 10 minutes
second question is, all existing bolts are gone due to extreme heat and rust which connect the downpipe to exhaust manifold, I don't want to pay £3 a bolt from BMW so £18 where I know I can get 100 of them for half that price.
do you need a specific type of bolt for these kind of work ? specially coated with somehting ?
i suppose a grade 8.8 will do wit self locking nut but not sure if it needs any coating on it0 -

Clean all the rust off the weld area and vee out the crack before you start welding.i suppose a grade 8.8 will do wit self locking nut but not sure if it needs any coating on it
Don't use a "Nyloc" type nut.0 -

I suppose the nyloc burns, what else can happen?0

The nut comes loose and your exhaust system falls to bits.
Next thread perhaps?0 -

Although I've seen enough ordinary nuts fitted with spring washers. Heat and rust soon "weld" it up!0 -
exhaust is coming off
I might as well decat it myself and don't pay someone else
Will meausre the bore and order mild steel
which one the two suckers do you think is the cat .
I know one is cat and one is silencer
look at the pic below ( pay attention to the one closer to you with two pipes)
i hope it is not the first two boxes which are on bend as I can't then replace it and need a pipe bender
if it is second set of boxes then i can cut and replace.
i have a strong feeling it is the first one on the bend0
