Hope this hasn't been mentioned before, thread is 9 pages long and I haven't read it. Just had to show you what I found today. How cute are these.

Apparently from reading you can do cake and bread too. Freeze it raw keep for up to 1 month then cook in the jar with lid off. (Now I'm not enough of a cook to know this is fact and would think jars and lids would need to be sterilised first - do jars explode in the oven? I have no idea) but if it is all correct what a great gift on it's own or as part of a hamper gift. Especially for elderly relatives/friends. Nice label on the top of jar, ribbon round lid and a tag giving instructions, remove lid, oven temp and how long to cook, I think it's just perfect.0 -

my cousin has baked some cakes-in-a-jar before - The US jars were like kilner ones but they have a groove around the top and you screw on the lid and rubber band (rather than UK which clip) they were very successful - a real novelty gift. She did sterilize the lid and they didn't blow up0 -
Thanks Chris for the useful info, it's always handy to know someone has tried these things successfully. I had a glass oven door explode into tiny pieces while cooking dinner once so I'm very wary LOL.
I said a gift for elderly people but I know I'd love to recieve something like this.(I can't eat them myself but there's two chaps here who'd make light work of them.)0 -
I bought a nice jar £1 from Tesco yesterday and my mum said "oh that's a nice jar" (hint I would like one of those!). So as she doesn't have a Tesco near her I gave her mine. Just hope they haven't sold out when I go back! I was looking foward to finishing my 365 facts jarsaving for ds2's summer international scout camp - £200

Not sure if anyone has already posted about teddy bear shaped jars, but I've just found some that might be useful for kids gifts in a jar.............although at the moment it is saying out of stock for them, could be worth keeping an eye on themHonorary Northern Bird bestowed by AnselmI'm a Board Guide and volunteer to help get your forum questions answered and keep the forum running smoothly on Special Occasions, Green/Ethical, Motoring/Overseas/UK Travel & Flood boards, it's not part of my role to deal with reportable posts. was rushing out this morning so didn't explain very well - when she gave these as presents, she sterilised the lid but when she cooked them, she did didn't use the lid.
The same thing happened to me with the glass door - The manufacturers tried to make out it was wet, it wasn't, but even if it had been, why should that make any difference?
i was amazed at how many pieces there were covering the floor and they got everywhere!!
The thing that bothered me most wasn't the runaround from all the different departments i got when i rang but the fact that only one person out of probably eight or nine that I spoke to, actually bothered to ask if anyone had been hurt!!:mad:0 -

northernlass £1 was the original price for the jar and it was on the shelf with all the other jars. It was a shaped jar. I have looked at the website but couldn't see any jars on there. It might be worth giving them a ring to see if they have any in.saving for ds2's summer international scout camp - £200
