If a CC is used by someone else?

If I let my Wife use my card (i.e. give her the PIN) at a supermarket (or similar sale point) would the sales assistant know that the CC is being used by someone else (in this case a female instead of a male)?

Thanks.

Thanks for your time.

  • If they see that the card says Mr and they can successfully identify your wife as being female, then yes.

However, most cards are not now handed to the sales assistant.

Unless they look at the card then no. Most of my cards don't state title.

I remember in the "old" days when a transaction exceeded a shop's floor limit. The sales person would phone the credit card company and one of the questions that they asked was was the cardholder male or female.

Anyone can use your card with your permission, you give them your permission with the revelation of your pin.

Hence why they won't refund when the pin is used.

They "can", but you are not supposed to give the PIN to anybody or let anybody else use the card.

Yes, the presumption being that if the PIN was used, it was either the cardholder or somebody with their permission.

Hence when you report a card lost/stolen, they ask if anybody could have known the PIN. If you say "no" and further transactions go through, they assume it's the cardholder or somebody the cardholder gave the PIN to. If you say "yes, I wrote it on a little piece of paper and it was in my bag which was stolen at the same time" or "yes, a bloke was looking over my shoulder and he might have seen me type it in", then you're safer - because they can no longer use use of PIN as proof of use by the cardholder. Note, they can't use negligence to make you liable. (At least with CCs.)

Maybe, possibly not under gender discrimination rules?

OP - have you thought about asking for an additional card for your wife.

It will save you handing it back and forth and mean she can keep it with her all the time.

He's already doing that - just by sharing the card & PIN (which he shouldn't do)
