    Welcome back to the returnees.
Mr N beat me to the kitchen cleaning this morning so I spent most of the day in the Room of Doom i.e. my office. At least 2 shelves worth of the dreaded documents are now bagged, boxed, labelled and in the loft. Decided they were no more of a fire risk than in the office. I also sorted 3 other boxes - filing and binning. Plus logged a load of CPD which has been a frog for ages. Was very pleased as I've felt very shivery and generally unwell so missed clubbercise.

Squirrel duty is a blast from the past...had to hang up my costume as I was getting too old for those shenanigans! Stripes is 9 now and still very, very stoopid! How's everything with you?

Well, I managed to complete day 1...maybe I should quit whilst I'm ahead! :rotfl:

I have a challenge for Master Moo.... Can he manage to make less mess with his snacky foods than Ronnie the Jack Russell does with his? :D You can tell where Ronnie's eaten a biscuit, because there's a foot-wide scattering of crumbs on the floor. :rotfl:

    Morning all

Can I ask? are soda crystals the same as caustic soda? I have caustic soda and it says on the pack add crystals to cold water, never add water to crystals. The man who delivered the washing machine recommended I use it to get rid of my smelly kitchen sink - and he said just pour the crystals in, leave it, then wash them down; but I've never dared because of the instructions on the pack. (That's why I didn't do Chemistry O-level: I was scared of the Bunsen burner never mind the chemical reactions :o )

Pack also says not to use on aluminium. I presume my kitchen sink is stainless steel??

Bathroom: I bought a new shower curtain and bath mat set to replace the minging items currently in use, but didn't feel inclined to put the new items in a grotty bathroom. So today I'll MAD in the bathroom. It's not cluttered in there, so that's a start.

I had a new pair of glasses from a new-to-me optician once, and they'd put varifocals in both lenses - my eyes are very different from each other and that caused me HUGE problems. The technician was very offhand and it wasn't until another technician tested the lenses that we discovered what the problem was so it took weeks to sort it out. Like you, I'd never go back there. We've got a medical school here and I hear they do cut price eyetests and glasses so I'm going to give them a whirl, although my ey6 tests are now free because I'm over 60. :j :money: :j
Anyone like to join me for a roast dinner? Have spent £11 on a joint of beef as a treat because everyone was saying we never have roast beef. DH might be late home, which cant be helped, DS2 has disappeared off to his girlfriends, DS1 is not really hungry.

Never again. In fact I now dont know if I can be bothered to do the veg and potatoes etc. Grrrr ....

Really sorry to hear about that, YL. (((Hugs)))

Absolutely not! Caustic soda is incredibly strong and I'm terrified of it. If you put caustic soda down a slow drain and where there's already a blockage, the stuff can set like concrete and the drain will need replacing.

Soda crystals are quite benign in comparison and useful but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's harmless because it's another chemical so I keep the actual use of it to a minimum. It's brilliant at what it does though.

It also says on the soda crystal packet not to use it on aluminium but I've used it on my kitchen sink and around all the plugholes in the house so I'm assuming, like you, that they're stainless steel. I chucked out all my aluminium saucepans after the publication of information about the link between aluminium and alzheimers, so I don't think I've got much aluminium left in the kitchen, either.

It's all necessary but I'm struggling to do my own lists as I need to do some research for a new volunteer role I'm starting on Thursday! I'll post later about progress achieved yesterday and today. There has been some, promise.

    No, no, no!!!
Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) counts as "dangerous goods" for chemical transportation, although it is an "essential ingredient" in soap making - that says something about the chemicals we put on our skins! I wouldn't have any of the pure product in the house - far too dangerous. Take it to a pharmacist and ask them to dispose of it safely for you. What you need is household soda (sodium carbonate).

    DH is still poorly :(

I used to have plentiful supplies of caustic soda in our garage - kilos and kilos of the stuff - when I made soap as a business.

It is possible to use it on drains (some commercial drain cleaners are caustic soda based) but it is definitely something to be wary of - always prep the way it says on the instructions - never the other as that can be dangerous - and preferably outside - it stinks and hurts your eyes and you need to try not to breathe it in. The solution is self heating and the liquid then gets quite hot - so I used to leave it to cool outside (being mindful of children/ animals) I'm very lax about glove use with things normally, but I was always very careful when it came to cs - the burns aren't nice

I think the delivery guy was getting confused between caustic and washing sodas!
