Thanks so much for your replies.
After checking out some of providers mentioned, I have decided to try Giff Gaff. I know there are cheaper ones, but they seem to have some terms and conditions that wouldn't really suit our needs.
My OH needs a new phone so that is OK as we can buy an unlocked one. However, my old Nokia 1100 is locked into Virgin, so presumably I would have to buy a new phone as well, which is a bit of a pain.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -

Have you been using Virgin on your 1100 in the last 30 days?
Check out the Virgin site, they will unlock for free if you have been using themWhen an eel bites your bum, that's a Moray0 -

There are plenty of pay-as-you-go mobile providers offering calls to UK landline numbers, non-geographic 03 numbers and UK mobile numbers at rates that are well under 10p per minute.
No-one needs to be spending ridiculous amounts such as 30p to 55p per minute.0 -
It's obvious, but needs to be pointed out, the best network has to have coverage in the area you need it. There are lots of tales on this board of people buying phones or SIMO deals to find their chosen network has no coverage where they need it. Please check first.0

Even from networks which claim 99% coverage. Always been amazed how many people seem to live in that 1%!0 -
And the best way to check coverage is get a free Sim, or borrow one, and try it in your phone, in your houseWhen an eel bites your bum, that's a Moray0

Best network for my area appears to be 02 by a long way. So Giff Gaff should be okay then.
Have also got a code from Virgin to unlock my faithful old Nokia 1100:TStopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -
Remember too that the coverage measurement is percentage of population and not percentage of land area.
A phone network could put a phone mast covering a one mile radius in each of the fifty most populous cities in the UK and already claim to cover "50%". The reality would be coverage of about 0.01% of the land area of the UK.0 -
GiffGaff is 15p per minute, 5p text and 5p MB for non goody bags.Best network for my area appears to be 02 by a long way. So Giff Gaff should be okay then.
