Used car from dealer fault advice please!

I may be stating the obvious, but why did you buy a car without apparently test driving it? You could have saved yourself all this hassle. No free lunch, and no free laptop

To give everyone an update, spoke to the area manager who offered to look at the car and after the checks they found no faults. I was half expecting them to say that.
Before speaking to the area manager and them checking over the car I've spoke to comsumer direct for advice and how to deal with this (in my area they follow issues like this and not trading standards). To be fair they've been really helpful. EG writing a letter on the issues and how i feel the matter should be resolve by.
Anyways im picking the car up from the seller tomorrow and taking it to the manufacturer main dealer for them to check it over. And if they find faults they will write a report which i take back to the seller.0 -

So Mercdriver what do you advise now? Given that 'rights on his side' hasn't really worked yet0

At the moment I haven't seen any suggestion that the OP has "exercised" those rights.glentoran99 wrote: »So Mercdriver what do you advise now? Given that 'rights on his side' hasn't really worked yet
Instead of criticising others for giving the OP the correct information they asked for or trying to score points how about coming up with some advice yourself.0 -
You will of course have to pay the main dealer for the inspection and report, whether faults are found or not. Why didn't you drive the car with the sales manager present so you could demonstrate the faults you allege? No free lunch, and no free laptop

This is the question the OP asked.
"What is my rights on this? Reading online i think i should be entitled to get a refund?"
Maybe as Neilmcl says you should think about answering the question rather than have a go at those of us that do answer the question.
The OP is gathering evidence, which is a sensible thing to do. Going to a dealer will mean he will have an independent report, something that would serve him well should he make the decision to take it to court if the dealer decides he won't co-operate.
Answering the question is about giving the OP the best information so he can make the decision himself. Your 'fall down and surrender as it is less hassle' is one way of doing things. It is not the only way. He does not in the first 30 days have to give the dealer the opportunity to do a fix. The reason? A quick fix might get the car over the 30 day deadline where it will be more difficult to reject the car when it then fails again.
It's a national dealer so closing down and changing name would appear to be very unlikely.0 -

As I said in a previous post I never once said fall down and surrender. What I did say was be prepared for a battle and be prepared to go the whole way. The thread evolved into what to do if (as has happened) the dealer didn't give in easily, you seem to know what your talking about so asked what you would advise, I never criticised I asked
This thread could turn out very useful for people in the future0
