I used sainsburys basics vodka to make jelly baby vodka. It tasted divine but I didn't drink THAT much of it (honest!) and had a really bad head in the morning. So value stuff seems OK from a taste point of view - but it does give you a raging hangover in the morning worse than better quality vodka!
I also made toffee vodka, I used the chewy toffees cos werthers were out of stock at my sainsburys, but oh it was gross, I melted them by putting the bottle in a sink of hot water, and then when it was all melted put the botle in the fridge, an hour later I took it out and there's a massive lump of butter in there. gross. I had to sieve it a few times to get all the lumps out. tasted OK though but i think i'd use hard toffee next time - i think its got less oil/butter in!0 -

I have just made the toffee vodka....I did have a bit (a lot) of trouble chopping up the werthers.
My rolling pin has now got huge dents in it.
The best way I found was to turn the werthers so the flat side was facing up and then using a sharp knife, tap the knife with the rolling pin and that seemed to slice through the middle ok.
Before, they were going off like hand grenades all over the kitchen. :rotfl:
Miss Twit (14) is very impressed....needless to say, I have marked the bottle to check any secret swigging. :eek:Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -

Several weeks ago I made the Werthers Vodka. Straight from the freezer, topped up with a tablespoon or two of evaporated milk, it is to die for! I didn't chop up the sweeties, just put them all in a kilner jar.
Last night I started (straight from the jar) on the sloe vodka! Yummy yummy but lethal. Oh, I can't wait for Xmas, it will all have gone by then.Do not allow the risk of failure to stop you trying!0 -
I used tesco value toffees which are chewy. Are worthers the same or more like hard candy? Mine worked out well btw, trying to ignore it sat in the fridge calling out, 'drink me'.0

With the Mars bars not melting you need to make the liquid hot to make the chocolate melt - In the past we've put the (SEALED!!) bottle into the dishwasher with our usual stuff so that it heats up and melts into the vodka. You can do it by putting the bottle in boiling water to warm up as well - think we usualy have the vodka in the dishwasher for a few cycles, shaking in between and then strain before serving
(we strain into a jug and then back in the bottle)
Hope that helps!0 -
I think I have a new one....haven't seen it mentioned anyway. I've made chocolate eclair vodka with vodka £4.99 for 70CL at Tesco, eclairs: tesco value 40p and an extra stick of dairy milk (half a standard bar each) as the choc needs a boost. Sat on my boiler now to melt the choc but already smells great and different to plain toffee. Yum.0
