It's not the same in every case on every car.
But it is in the case of the Corsa which is what OP is talking about.

If you have an iffy back, don't get a 3 door.... :)

Why, surely if you're the driver it makes no difference.

Because you have to do acrobatics to get out of the car in a car park. :)

Way back in the 70s - my Dad's theory was that a 3 door was better because there were 2 less door sills to rust! I suspect he also preferred the slightly longer door/opening on grounds of being 6'2".

I think theres two reasons why historically 3 door variants of stuff like Corsa sold more :-

They're seen as "sportier", as the hot version was usually a 3 door.
They're usually cheaper than the 5 door variant.

Thats changing though - for example, you cant buy a 3 door Focus any more and likewise you cant buy a 3 door Clio - so now even the "hot" versions are now 5 door.
Again, going back to the 70s, I agree on image. We had a couple of 2-door Escort Estates (Mk 1 and 2) which kind of contradicted the idea of sportiness but I don't think there was a 4-door Escort Estate until the MK 3 hatch arrived. There was a 3-door Mk3 estate but I'm not sure if it continued much longer. So the trend from 3 door to 5 door has been going on for a while there. The 3 door Focus ended with the Mark 2 in 2011 or so.
I need to think of something new here...

Tax is based on the CO2 emissions so no difference there.

I have had a 3 door for 12 years and when looking for a new one it had to be 5 doors:
    1. No getting out to let out back passenger.
    2. No chance of wrecking the spring when moving seat forward.
    3. A lot easier putting my youngest nephew in the car also compared when I was doing it in a 3 door.

I think it's that car parks have tiny spaces and 3 doors doors are bigger so harder to get out of the front in.

3 door cars have bigger doors - this makes it harder to get in and out of if you're beside a car in a car park, but can also make it easier to get in and out of if you're tall, and your seat sits quite far back, instead of whacking your back off the pillar (ouch!).
Used to be about a £500 difference, new, between 3 and 5 door hatchbacks.
