You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -

The stamps have phosphor/fluorescent printing on them - so sorting machinery can tell a 1st from a 2nd. So if you are using smaller value 1st class to make up a 2nd class the equipment may be reading it as 1st and sorting appropriately. May vary depending on what model of equipment a particular sorting office has; how busy it is and various other factors though.
Put simply. The only 'delay' with 2nd class is network capacity.
So if a vehicle is maxed out. 1st class is prioritised.
In final leg mail centre sorting,if sorting capacity is strained then first class takes priority.
once it hits deliveries 1st/2nd class is moot and it is all due delivery.
So a 2nd class item getting next day delivery, doesnt mean it beat the system.
Even more so at xmas where they are additional parcel sort centres and mail can leapfrog other mail due to the way the mail moves.0 -
