Credit cards, prestige and snobbery

Funnily enough, the last time I used my MBNA platinum card, the sales person commented on how nicely it matched the goods purchased (deposit on a silver Honda Shadow - too long til payday to use my debit card *shame*).
I do keep the MBNA card because it's lovely sparkly silver, but I regularly tart the rest of my cards around for the best deal. So I may be shallow, but not stupid!
MBNA Platinum is borderline subprime card isn't it? I never got my one out in public! So I guess I did care what people thoughtGot rid of it recently - the use of "platinum" is using artistic licence.
I like using my Debit card(I have other CCs but only use them for online transactions abroad, for the protection)

Yup - you're a snob. I don't understand why it matters one jot to you, and I think it's rather sad that you move away from your OH just because of the type of plastic he's waving around....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I don't have a credit card so no"I'm not from around here, I have my own customs"
For confirmation: No, I'm not a 40 year old woman, I'm a 26 year old bloke!0 -

I think you misunderstood the irony that was intended. I think I did say that I had no reasons particularly for picking those two - I could've chosen a Coutts credit card and the Vanquis card if I'd wanted to make the contrast even greater - other than the fact that the stores themselves are perceived to cater for different 'types' of customers. I wouldn't have an Asda credit card as they are provided by GE from memory and their customer service was disastrous the last time I had a card from them. In contrast the John Lewis card I had provided excellent CS, but again it just adds to the 'difference' in the card.
As I said in one of the really early posts, the branch of JL we have here is particularly well staffed by assistants who look like they have a bad smell under their nose and MOST definitely treat you differently depending on what you wear: wear a suit to work and go in shopping after you finish, and you get a 'sir' and conversation from them, wear jeans and a t and you might get a 'thank you' if you're lucky.
Anyway I digress. I choose my credit card for the benefits it gives me - cashback, rewards, online banking, overall customer service and way down the list - what the card looks like. My main card is Egg Money - it's fluorescent green for God's sake. How can that possibly instil admiration or envy in another person! :rolleyes:0 -

Again, I think you missed the humour that was perhaps intended in the original OP. This thread is supposed to be a bit tongue-in-cheek and not intended to acurately reflect a persons deep personality0 -
Like it or not people are snobby........
I used my platinum card for something this past week and the guy working with was looking at it....................totally random:rolleyes:
Like it or not people do treat you differently depending on the clothes you wear, car you drive, house you own and the cards you have. All these things give you a percieved "Status". Like it or not its the world we live in.......... Its nice sometimes to use an amex card or Platinum/Black/Gold in the places you want to and its even better at 0% or with some nice cashback!
Mind you this thread is pretty tongue in cheek though ha ha! Were all moneysavers so we are in it for the deals, as luck would have it being a moveysaver eventually nets you a decent credit history so you can get nice sparkly cards with the best deals:D0 -
Interesting thread to read through
My OH and I both have HSBC Mastercards, mine is a bog standard red/black design, quite nice, have to admit to being a tad jealous of his which has the Welsh flag on it.
As I need to build my credit rating up I'm looking at the 'sub-prime' cards and deciding which one to apply for, and have to admit that I'm looking at Capital One because I get the option of a lab puppy on it (we have a labrador ourselves). Obviously if there was any real reason (cashback or 0% etc) to choose one over another then the design wouldn't come into it, but when they're all much of a muchness a cute picture might sway it for me.0 -
I've never read so much Bulls**t in all my life - and a good percentage of it from people up to their eyeballs in debt!0

Another person misses the tongue in cheek part of the thread.......:j0 -
I've been away for a while so I thought I'd drag this thread up again with an update! Egotistical I know
Anyway, I've ditched my Barclays Platinum card after 10 years due to their shoddy customer service (idiots couldn't even post me a form!). I've also ditched my Morgan Stanley Platinum card because they messed around with payment dates, then got taken over by Goldfish and are now part of Barclays (the final straw)!
Both of the above used to get positive comments of recognition from friends/colleagues.
Also just closed the A&L card because I've never received so much junk mail from a provider before.
And am now using Capital One WorldCard which looks like a tacky loyalty card (but is supposedly their version of a Platinum card) and gives cashback, and the standard Halifax one with the 15month interest free transfer deal. The Halifax card is a lovely striking white, but it never leaves the house so it's kind of irrelevant!
With all the swapping I'm glad to say I'm considering myself a rate tart rather than a poser these days! :rotfl:0
