I bought a Renault capture We have had about 8 Renaults over the last 15 years between my husband, daughters, son in law and myself. I had a Clio then a Renault convertible which I exchanged for the Capture when my eldest grandchild was born as I needed a bigger car to hold buggy etc on days I was looking after her. I have had it 4 years and part exchanged with my convertible and topped up with savings. My husband and youngest daughter both have Scenics and my eldest daughter has a Clio. Son in law had a Megane. We have a great Renault garage near us and never had issues with any of them.

You should be able to get a decent car for £10k. I think I spent that altogether with the part ex. Of course you can go cheaper but depends on how old a car you are looking at and which car. Presumably you would not get much for your existing car?

Just had a look on Auto trader, searched for my car with same age, same mileage and an automatic like mine and there around £2,000.

Never part exchanged a car before, I presume a dealer would offer less?

Although if I keep it until something big goes wrong with it it'll be worth around £0 :rotfl:

I saw an old M reg fiesta on my drive to work this morning, that's 1994 so 25 years old.

If my car lasts as long as that I've got 12 years before I have to worry about it haha
  • It depends on the cost of the car you are buying as to how much they offer for the car you are p/e. Sometimes they give you more than value or knock some off the car you are buying. Goodness 25 years would be good but I wouldn't recommend keeping one that long.

One of my daughters had a Y reg fiesta as her first car but as she went to uni on the coast it was prone to rust.

Husband gets paid tomorrow (early, normally its the 25th) so it will have to last him until 25th January. That'll be interesting!

    Debt
    £8,496

    Savings
    S&S ISA £7,585
    Easy Access £3,200

    Current Accounts
Halifax £51.03 (just going to leave it there and carry it over)
    Nationwide £80
  • Best thing to do if you get paid early is put money aside until normal payday but given your DHs tendency to overspend I can't see that happening. January will be a long month. Any request for money from him would be met by a reminder you have more than £8k debt to repay.

I'm getting paid on Monday 23rd, a week earlier than normal, but then we also get paid early in January too so shouldn't affect me too much

I hardly spend anything anyway :rotfl:

Got a few more presents to buy so going shopping this afternoon.

Going to transfer some money out of my savings account, better than paying on a credit card I guess :)
  • Yes I would say so given you are trying to reduce debt so don't take the card to nil every month.

I have no more presents or food to buy thank goodness. Tackled the supermarket at 7.45 am this morning and have riverford delivery tomorrow with our Xmas dinner and nut roast for DD1. I have used credit card but we repay it in full each month so I am not bothered about that.

I expect your DS is getting excited. My 2 DGD are bouncing, we are taking them to a NT property this afternoon where the house is done up with fairytale themes in each room.

  • Did you go for the Barclaycard deal btw or are you still aiming to clear the debt by the end of next year?

I haven't done the transfer yet, still thinking about it

I sent another £70 to the debt, new balance £8,426

Pay day today, DS needs a coat and have seen one in Primark for £17 so going into town at lunch time. Going to wrap it up and add it to his present pile so its one more thing he can open

Then that's the Christmas shopping done!

Cant wait to get back to frugality!
  • Yes I have to say it seems all pay out at the moment. Coat sounds like a bargain. I have spent the morning doing Christmas cupcakes with DGD1 and whole family off to Christmas light show at local country park this afternoon. Glad the rain is holding off.

Well done on paying off the £70. Every bit helps.
