Did you know Thrifty Lesley is going through a very sad time at the moment as her daughter is terminally ill. They had an early Christmas for her but it looks like she might make this one after all. I follow her on FB. So very sad 😢

Sadly she passed away this morning.

  • i hadn't read her posts for a while. How sad for Lesley and her family.
  • Day 1 of employment break and we spent it shuffling stuff to make the main living area more pleasant to sit in.

That said I want move more now that I'm not tied to a desk. my tiny study got cleared out and we managed to squeeze the cross trainer in, facing the window. A different reason to not like having to be in there going forwards!
Exercise is going to be a priority.

i also want to eat better.
I am a notorious food dodger (despite my interest in cooking) and generally don't eat as clean or varied diet as I should. 4 portions of veg today which is outstanding for me.

frittering? I wanted some cut flowers, but L yesterday had a very poor selection and the coop was worse today. It did mean a no spend day at least.

dinner was chicken kebabs, with HM pitta bread and grated red cabbage and carrot.

I blanched and froze three bags of parsnips too. Only me who likes them so that'll keep me going until the cheap Easter veg hopefully.
  • Another busy day, it's lovely not to have a deadline of what I want to get done before I go back to work.

Brine made ready for the turkey later, and cranberry sauce made. I'm really chuffed that I picked my home grown celeriac earlier. It's tennis ball sized, but I grew it. I've frozen a few more things to make room in the fridge but it really is grid locked in there now.
  • Reading elsewhere I was surprised at how many people don't like bread sauce. It doesn't like me but it's one of my favourite things.

milk, onion studded with cloves and a bay leaf in a small pan, bring it up to a simmer and turn it off. Let it steep for a few hours, the longer the better. Sieve out the stuff so you just have the flavoured milk then bring it back to warm. Add a generous walnut of butter, and some cubes of good crust less bread (NOT cheap toast bread) and heat gently, stirring, till it's nice and thick, gently warming.  Add a dash of cream and black pepper. Just glorious.

It works with nasty GF bread but I'd rather have a small portion and stomach ache.

I’ve never had bread sauce so can’t comment either way but feel like it’s something I probably wouldn’t like but don’t know why 🤔

I remember the annual ritual of my grandma making bread sauce when she was staggering around three Sherrys in! 😂

I picked parsley yesterday from my greenhouse to use in my stuffed mushrooms today - just one, substantial, healthy, vigorous sprig - so no wages rest of packet and I know it’s completely fresh and organic. So I completely ‘get’ your celeriac satisfaction 😊😉
