Tired leeks made leek and potato soup in the soup maker. The key thing is about half as much potato as leek unless you like thin soup. I used a third milk to two thirds stock as I have no cream. My mother used to add milk powder instead, or you can add a little instant mash which both thickens and flavours.
I tidied the freezer, and removed a UFO. Half defrosted the label says beef stock. I'm thinking minestrone with the leftover tomato bits.My mortgage free diary: +++ Divide by Cucumber Error. Please reinstall universe and reboot+++

I've been watching the series 'Back in Time With the Corner Shop' on BBC. It's an eye opener on what the U.K. went through food and household goods wise since the end of the 1890's till the 1990's. Two world wars (with extensive rationing in and for some years beyond WW2), the Great Depression, strikes etc. Perhaps in years to come they'll make another series that includes our current troubles - I can hear the howls of laughter when watching the bit on The Great Toilet Roll Debacle.....redofromstart said:I had to google Wooton pie but it made me smile. Standing in the co-op queue this morning I thought of Nella Lasts diary, and my beloved Angela Thirkells and was reminded that it was the time it took to get things you didn't really want as well as the lack of volume that people suffered with. Finally Debt Free! - July 2016 🌟

That sounds amazing Redo! I've literally just added garlic powder, onion granules and chipotle chilli flakes to my Ocado order 😂😂 I have some burgers in the freezer that I wanted to do something different with, so this will be perfect!redofromstart said:It was a nice dinner @doingitanyway and one I would make again
Tonight we had pasta with meatballs. I found lurking in the bottom of the freezer some very reduced burgers which I defrosted, split into sixths and rolled into rough balls Pan browned, into pyrex oven proof dish. Chopped tomatoes, teaspoon of sugar, onion granuals, garlic powder and a pinch of chipotle chilli flakes for heat and smoke. Half an hour in the oven, served with linguine. I dislike pasta so a rare beast in this household.
1lb of meat could have coped with half a tin of tomatoes. I kept the left over to go into tomorrows minestrone.
How much garlic powder and onion granules do you put in?Mortgage started November 2024 | Repayments started Jan 2025 | £358,000 | 22 years | 5 yr fix @ 3.74%

@DrSpendingLittle half teaspoon garlic powder, couple of the onion. You can use real onions but you would need to sweat them and DS1 hates them.My mortgage free diary: +++ Divide by Cucumber Error. Please reinstall universe and reboot+++

Thanks @redofromstart - I'll give it a go early next week. I have to admit to really quite enjoying having to make do with what food we have in the house. I've been cooking soup in the slow cooker for lunches and DF has been baking bread. I'm sure it'll wear off soon but I think I will take quite a lot from this experience of trying to make the best with the ingredients we have in, rather than defaulting to a takeaway or co-op run.
