Some idiot keyed my hire car

I don't think they will be able too - its a pretty deep scratch the length of the drivers door.

They 'held' £200 on my debit card but I believe this has already been returned. Although it isn't shown on my statement but I don't think a holding amount would be anyway.

Their conditions of rental and my contract state that on return of the vehicle, Avis representative will inspect the vehicle and highlight any new damage - the customer will be required to sign for this in agreement.

I believe I have a lot on my side should this progress. Hopefully though, this will be the last I hear of it...

It'll be picked up as soon as it gets back to the depot. Then your problems will start.

But the damage could have occured during his 15 mile journey back to depot?

But the OP didn't take photos of the undamaged car at the end of the hire period, which is something I always do on returning a hire car to the depot, and would do in these circumstances. Also he has stated on a public forum that they occurred at his home address.

Remember the law covering this is civil, so in court it would be balance of probabilities. If the OP had photos of the car at the original time of collection, then probability would side with him. Not so sure now.

OP says he did his own end of hire inspection at the end of the hire period* (as was required) ... OP hasn't said either way (as far as I can see) whether he took photos.

    * Hire period ended on Friday, not today when the vehicle was collected.

I'm sure the OP would have said if he had taken photos.

People do strange things when creating forum posts. I mean, how many times have we seen threads where an OP drip feeds information? :)

I walked after him to do the 'inspection' however he said "oh don't worry about all that, see you"

At which point I'd have wanted my copy of the inspection document with his signature on it.

Nope no photographs. As you can probably tell this was my first time hiring a car. Next time I'll be taking out the additional insurance and taking plenty of photographs. Lesson learnt.

Update - Avis have sent a signed Vehicle Rental receipt through (by email) with no additional charges.
