The Cutting Down / Giving Up Booze Thread (Part 14)

Hey loads of great results in December
Really impressive given the month.
There is an interesting article in the Guardian today (link here) by a woman who decided to tackle her alcohol issues, worth a read. Also one by Julie Bindel saying hangovers are great but I haven't read that one yet.
*edit I have read it now and it is worth reading too although suspect no one on this thread would agree with her.
Thanks for the links, CathyBird. Could you tweak the second one, because it doesn't seem to be working and I'd be interested in reading it.
The first one isn't unusual and is becoming quite commonplace. Someone realises they're drinking too much, decides to do something about it, realises how much of their life is built around alcohol and doesn't need to be, has a good time not drinking - and then goes straight back to it, in this case after a month. On a slow news day we'll then get another one from her saying she gave up for a month some time ago and it was absolutely fine, she learned a lot from it, and she's been in control of her drinking ever since so what's the problem.
I'm not sure her editor will allow the next one which she'll write in two years time - she found giving up for a month last time really easy but this time it was much tougher, but she's gone back to it again having done Dry January because although she can obviously control her drinking, life without champagne to celebrate the high days and holidays really isn't that much fun, is it?
So that's three years of not saying anything that hasn't been said by someone else before, and all of it leading right back to where she started. In the meantime someone else will be going a month without booze and the whole cycle will start all over again, each article gently encouraging people to think that if you have a real problem with booze, you don't have to actually give it up, it's fine if you just learn to moderate. And they generally appear around this time of year, too.
I'm all in favour of women sharing their experiences because this particular corner has been dominated by the hellfire and damnation brigade for far too long, but it's just not being honest with those of us who realise we're rather out of control and don't know how to get from where we are to where we really want to be. A month off the lash is a great idea, but if you always know you're going back to drinking and unwilling to accept that alcohol is addictive, I'm not sure how honest the journalist (who are trained to research stuff, they don't just make this stuff up) is really being.
Giving up really is an option for some of us, and when I start seeing honest articles about how to go about it, I'll cheer very loudly indeed. In the meantime she has at least raised the issue and that's a start.thriftmonster wrote: »Can I join in please? Welcome and good luck! What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.0 -

 good to be starting 2018 and welcome to all.
I know what you mean about the quality of journalism HB. While some people (like you:)) will read, analyse and choose to accept or discard 'advice' others are not so discerning. This time of the year the papers and books are full of it both on drinking and eating. It makes me cross to see people making loads of money on the backs of the gullible but I suppose if it motivates people to get started on changing habits then it's fairly harmless. What's even more worrying is that the quality of politics and political journalism is based on the same premise: feeding nonsense to the gullible.
No plans to drink tonight, although if we get three points tonight I might change my mind.;)
