  • They weren't tourists, they were residents of Hurghada. Not saying that makes it better, just stating facts.

    They were German tourists.

I'm not disagreeing with you either karcher. But like others earlier in the thread have said, a beach holiday with an ever present twitchy, not very well trained, and poorly paid armed guard on street corners, outside hotel entrances, and at regular intervals along the beach is hardly relaxing.

Like most folk on this forum, we live in UK, and have no choice but to accept what's chucked at us......BUT we do have a choice of where we go to on holiday.....see you in beautiful Croatia in a few weeks.;)

    Very true.

I've never been to Croatia, it is on my 'To go to' list though ;)
(Vietnam and Cambodia are first up :D)

    Have a fabulous time :)

There's a couple of current threads on both countries, with lots of sound recent first-hand advice.

Thanks.....nailed-on, we will. Just passing through Split, using it to top and tail a couple of weeks in Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Seven people died in the last London attack, more in Manchester and many in Paris. Do you avoid these places too?

    Really?

The two who died may have been residents, evenso they were Germans who looked like tourists to the attacker, those injured were tourists. The three that were targeted the year before in a similar attack certainly weren't residents, they were tourists.

You appear to be forgetting 9/11

TOURISTS weren't the prime targets in 9/11.

I'm not disagreeing with you Pete, but clearly terrorism can happen anywhere; London, Paris, Manchester, to name a recent few....

Major cities as well as crowded holiday resorts are, sadly, 'prime targets' too despite all the high alerts, safety measures and policing etc, in place.

Still missing the point. We have to go about our daily lives and hope not to be the target of a random terrorist attack otherwise we wouldn't leave our homes. There are many of us who are then unwilling to up the stakes by going to places where we would be the prime target like Tunisia and Egypt.

Let's face it, a beach resort full of western tourists can be an attractive target for terrorists in any part of the world, and there's always a chance of them choosing a less protected one at any time.

But in a country with traditional Islamic culture such as Tunisia the presence of scantily clad westerners consuming alcohol, pork and other perceived decadence is a provocation that can only inflame local and regional extremist sentiment. However, the force of commercial interests and the desire for cheap sunshine holidays seem to overcome any regard for this aspect.

Personally I have no interest in such environments and would not go there even if they paid me, regardless of security concerns.

No but they were still killed. Tourists weren't the target in London but were still killed.
