I did do a search before buying the item and all the places selling the item was around the same price but they all had different postage costs (Some was charging as much as the item).
I've now found out the item is no longer being made and the places that are still selling the item is selling above the normal suggested price to take advantage of this situation for their own benefit.

So you have your answer now, it sounds like the seller has a good business head on them. Obviously no seller is going to buy things that he has to sell at a loss!

I assume now you are happy to leave a positive?

    More like being greedy :p.
How are they selling at a loss as they would have bought the item lower than the price on the item.

It isn't greed. It is supply and demand. They supplied it and you were happy to pay the price.

How do you know how much they paid for it.

How much are we actually talking here?

I expect it was some earth shattering amount like £1.99 or some such....

You didn't have to buy it if you didn't like the price. Do you check when shopping in Tesco how much the mark up is before you buy a can of beans?
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

I'm sure some kind regular here can explain easily to you what a business Is and also the basics around supply and demand but frankly I don't have the time .

I do however have a gaming item my son bought for around the £5 mark 8 years or so ago that is now in very short supply and which currently has been bid up to £12.99 (before postage) with several days still to go- if that makes me greedy on his behalf then so be it, I just consider it fortunate that people still want an older used item and are willing to pay for it.

That's a good point, I paid £24.99 for a bottle of wine in a restaurant this week which I can buy in Tesco for less than £10 a bottle - I'd better boycott that restaurant as they are obviously ripping me off.

(VIlla Maria if anyone is interested- it is delicious!)

And sometimes we do "boycott" a supermarket simply by comparing one with another. A bottle of Worcestershire sauce in Morrisons is £2.60 when I last looked and under £1.60 in B&M, so I simply avoided buying it in Morrisons and bought 3 in B&M. Now I wonder what the mark-up is on it in Morrisons???

Yes I do. Would you be happy to pick up a 40p tin of beans then you get to the till and they charge you £2.

Again you completely misunderstand the analogy offered, or are you now saying you somehow offered X amount but were charged Y instead?

To run with your beans analogy , you find a tin of beans and offer 40p which seller accepts but then find out they only actually cost the shop 12p. That BTW is how a business works, and your 40p beans probably did only cost 12p or so.
