It was with reference to the kids as sister was at work althought hubby did make a quick jibe and said i wonder what takeaways itll be this weekend.i did say i was still clearing away last weekends :-(.the kids are like whirlwinds 3 and 18months.i almost said id stand a better chance if you bloody helped me but i held my tongue.

Ok so i faffed around in conservatory managed to move the dining table round so i can pile all the things in there but havent piled the things as yet.i need to take linen out of there too or fold atleast.i almost sorted everything for the party tomorrow. And i have almost made two cakes for tomorrow.but its now time to collect kids :-(

    So i need to
    Put decorations up.
Moving living piles of stuff to conservatory
Tidy boys bedroom and hopefully it is just tidying as its been kndoed
    Make more/different cakes
    Tidy clean kitchen
Buy sausage rolls and something else that i cant remember
Get a box of dress up stuff down.
Ideally move more of the cut down trees in front garden so more people can park in the drive.
    Empty bathroom bin
Sweep and wash the floors throughout.
Get the dining chairs out of conservatory before i fill it with stuff so people can sit down
Prob more things when i think of them
Frugal living challenge - need to revisit its been.a while !! Need to reduce our debts!!

Looking at your list Minnie there's at least 3 things your DH could do - Get the box of dress up stuff down, move the cut down trees, empty the bathroom bin and get the dining chairs out of the conservatory - give him a list after all its his children too!!
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle
  • Quite right!

Elona your post struck a chord with me, when people were visiting anything extra always ended up in my bedroom, and it was getting me down. I made a real effort to get rid of stuff or find it a home, mostly craft UFOs and it's made such a difference. Before I used to go and open my knicker-drawer when I needed a morale boost, now I stand and gaze at my tidy bedroom!

:)MMF007, I'd caution you against putting your jewellery into an auction. The auction houses typically want to take a seller's premium and a buyer's premium, often 20 % each way. Because the buyers know they're going to get stung 20 %, they'll bid lower by that amount. You'll lose nearly half of its value that way.

A half sovereign is worth £120 on its own today. Gold is traded internationally and prices fluctuate a little day-to-day. Depending on the method used for the jewellery mount (scroll top with a gutter to hold the coin, fancywork, or soldered on) will depend on whether the coin is in good enough condition to be sold on for investment purposes.

Because sovereigns are 22 ct, they are relatively soft, and the milling on the edge can get worn away inside the gutter, any soldering to hold a loop directly onto the coin can never be fully removed, plus the polishing effect of the coin rubbing against clothing or skin devalues it slightly and it can't be re-sold for investment purposes, only for scrap. But only slightly, even a damaged half should go for about £100.

A half sov is 4 grammes of 22 ct gold. The mount will likely only be 9 ct as it needs to be stronger. Insist that a jeweller weigh it in front of you, subtract 4 g from the total weight, and be paid a price for the coin and a price for the mount/ chain should be transparent. 9 ct should get you £10/ gramme on the high street (the trade in Hatton Garden was weighing it in at £11.38 as of two days ago, when I had my most recent intel from a friend in that line of biz, the difference being his profit). HTH.

ETA; Just another remark; I've seen many sovs and half-sovs taken out of pendants and rings by jewellers as they can't see the condition of the coin until it's out. About 75% of the coins were damaged by the mounting process itself, friction of coin against mount and rubbing against clothing, so the majority are only scrap gold, only the minority survive jewellery use in investment-appropriate condition.

So i thought id be clever and take a bag of things i want to take back to different shops with me to get kids then take them after i pick them up.trouble is i forgot the receipts urghh.but i have remembered what i needed to buy...donuts for a game.so both kids are asleep in the car so i am a bit stuck as to what i can do now.not worth waking them up.she will be a nightmare.she is teething too.ive parked up at home instead of going to shop so i think ill put flapjacks in oven and they can be cooking while i sit here with kids.

Ooh GQ, you're a star! Thanks so much for the useful info. I have a couple of fine 9ct chains that I could add to the pile. All helps!
Indeed I think auctions now are charging so much in commission to both parties that traders are getting reluctant. More of a retail environment perhaps, and that won't work for scrap precious metal I guess.

A couple more bits of komono into CS bag - some pencils, 2 scarf rings (scarfs do not suit me), and a randon cushion cover.

I am also releasing a colouring book for adults, kindly bought for me by DH that I don't like. It is going to be posted to a friend who will, hopefully, love it (I think the pictures are too big with lots and lots of detail, so i am over-faced!) . I shall give her permission to dispose however she likes, if necessary. I have thanked DH, again, and explained that while it was very thoughtful, sadly I [STRIKE]hate[/STRIKE] am not keen on it :)
I have changed my work-life balance to a life-work balance.

:) It was my pleasure, MMF007.

To anyone who is contemplating selling gold, know what carat you've got and enquire by telephone beforehand what price per gramme for each carat you have to sell is being offered before you darken a jeweller's or We Buy Gold type of place's door. You can also deal with the bullion buyers in London (and probably in Brum, although that's not proximate to my location and my gang don't go there).

Always get stuff weighed in front of you. Don't let them take it out the back and come back out and make you an offer. A leading jeweller in this city bid a lady £50 for a quantity of scrap gold jewellery which another pal paid her just over £400 for later that same day.

Yup, I've heard nothing but carping from the trade about auctions for years now. So many antique and specialist dealers have given up on them in disgust at the premiums gouging so much that they can't get a margin themselves. The trade gets ripped off, amateur buyers get ripped off, sellers get ripped off...........

It's killing the business. Dealer yesterday told me that he could regularly get £500 for a Georgian bureau ten years ago and can barely sell them at £100 each now. Prices of antiques esp furniture are falling and it's largely due to the logjam in the business caused by those greedy auction houses. And many of them are full of know-nothings when it comes to assessing value and they pull some silly price out of their arris and .............. I better stop now, just thinking about some of the stuff I've heard in recent weeks has made my blood boil.:o

On topic, I unshopped a large carrier bag of saleable surplus clothes plus a slightly smaller bag of raggable clothes to the chazzer today.

I also took a brew at the juntique shop and ended up sorting some paperwork out and unblocking the sink. I am Wumman and not afraid of unscrewing plastic u-bends.:rotfl:

Although, I must declare, there was an interesting science experiment going on in there, half-expected to see something reach out of the primidorial ooze and give me punch - ick!

2 stuffed large carrier bags to CS yesterday, mostly books but a few nic-nacks from a display cabinet I've decided to empty and repurpose. A couple of items of clothing went too. There's 2 bags of sofa covers to go to a friend and a large chunk of foam (seat pad for a chair we're not keeping) that can go to.

I'm not sure which round of MK I'm on now but I can see so much more to go. I've got a couple of boxes of collectible items in the loft from my childhood that will be heading towards the bay of E later this week.....whilst they bring back happy memories, I've not had them out of the box for over 15 years so just the thought of them will be enough to keep those memories going.

    Morning.
We have almost finished our move to our temporary home while we do up our new house. I have been shocked by how much stuff has been moved, and I thought I had been cracking through the kondoing. I know I made the mistake of not running down food stocks significantly.
I think the majority of the building works will take 6 months, but I am aiming to get as kondo'd as possible before then so the move back will be easier. Paperwork is one to look at as are socks - mum gave me a big bag when she couldn't wear them any more, but I seem t o stick to my bamboo socks which are cosy and soft. Might get up and get on with that!
£400,000 starting Jan 2020 current end date Aug 2041 I would love the end date to be 2027 but will aim first for 2037.
    1% target £4000 so far £20 paid
