Today has been a hot one and I've been really irritable all day,I did get my hair cut though so now feel much better,I still haven't done the chickens because I got home at 2.30 ish had lunch and then promptly fell asleep on the settee until 5ish:eek: I was sooooo tired and have had a headache all day,I've just had a coffee and came here to have a read while i drank it,I've told them I will be out in a minute when I've woken up properly, they are both at the back door tapping their feet and if they had arms they would be folded in a determined way,I'm going to bribe them with mealworms when I go out and hopefully will be forgiven:D

I also have some washing to do and I want to clean the kitchen window,I can't do that though until the sun has gone round the side of the house later becasue it will be streaky otherwise and I AM GOING TO TIDY MY BEDROOM if is the last flaming thing I do,it's cooling down slightly now though so I feel more like doing things

I hope everyone else is having a lovely day :)

I too had ex batts, they were sorry looking ladies when they arrived but soon joined in with the other hens and lived very happily for a couple of years. I think that was when DD really made the connection with hens and chicken for dinner, they were so bald they looked ready for the pot!

Oh, your poor OH Slinky, I can't believe he's been banned! DD and I went for an early morning (7.30) swim to an outdoor pool this morning and I have to say the pensioners were lovely. Sadly it's a salt water pool as it's on the Firth of Clyde and I couldn't cope for very long. It was a good experience though and very busy which is good to see.

Thanks Camelot, good to hear you had a good time. He's going to go for a walk this evening instead of his usual swim. Hopefully he can find a gym to join for a few weeks so he can go there instead, even though there isn't another pool in the town. It's either that or propping up the bar in the hotel where he's staying.....

I was so angry last night it kept me awake. Swimming is his only hobby outside of work. He said he felt that him not having a local accent made the manager side with the locals...

I did say to him that it could have been worse, we're moving in a couple of years, wouldn't want to be banned from the pool 5 mins walk away, it's one of the reasons we've chosen that house.

Does he have transport Slinky? If so perhaps he could go to a pool in another town.

I've come to realise it's one of the advantages of a "bigger place" - ie city. When virtually no-one has a local accent/very few are local = there simply can't be any partisan decisions.

It literally never even occurred to me to expect any "special treatment" in my Home City (ie before moving here) and I was gobsmacked the one time I got offered a cheaper quote for some work because I was local - as it just didnt happen there.

The only time, apart from that, where I noted "special treatment" was happening was when "summat happened" at a supermarket check-out and the checkout operator favoured the wrong person (ie she had a local accent and so did the other customer). I could have turned round and said "Just because I havent got an accent doesnt mean I'm not local - I am local actually" - but I suspect they were a lot more similar to each other than they were to me all round and that probably wouldnt have made any difference and fairness wouldnt have happened anyway.:mad:::(. It was "birds of a feather flock together" and not calm objective "what's fair" that was happening there.....

I love names people give their chickens, when we had chooks the first three were Geraldine, Margery and Florence (known as Floppy) and the last trio were Sylvia, Barbara and Edwina, the first three were warren browns and the last Columbian blacktails, little characters each one of them and like people all 6 completely different. Margery thought she was a hawk of some kind and loved being carried round the garden on He Who Knows arm, Geraldine thought she was super chicken and even when I trimmed their flight feathers could still manage to fly on to the fence round their scratching enclosure and off the other side. They were all egg laying hybrids and gave us many beautiful brown eggs in their short lives, and I was sad to lose them one at a time. I think that digging with chickens as opposed to swimming with dolphins is one of the nicest things I've ever done, I'd put the fork into the earth and lift and when I looked down there were always 3 hopeful hens balanced on bits of it peering hopefully into the turned earth and making their happy 'Brrrrrrrkk' noise, dear old things!

Sadly there are far too many urban foxes in the village now to even contemplate chickens a friend has some including a bantam cockerel called Larry and I saw her chicken run in the back garden when I delivered something to her, concrete base, double wall mesh both mesh walls cemented into the ground and a solid roof, a sort of chicken fort knox, and it worked as she's had Larry for some time and you can't even get cross at the foxes as we are building on all the green spaces they've dwelt on for years and they are in an ever decreasing area and the housing stock locally goes up and up, also very sad!

Loving all the chicken tales, especially the sunbathing chooks.

I know a lady who has rescue chickens, and when I arrive and knock on her door they come running up. Apparently they want inside to sit on the sofa :)

I guess if all of a battery chook's life has been inside with things to sit on, then why not carry on that behaviour in a home with a sofa?!

DS2 was digging in the garden a few years ago and the hens kept getting in the way, he picked them up one by one and sat them on the door of their run. They were too scared to fly down and stayed there until I came home and rescued them!
