Back from our travels to Germany. All went fine and it was good to see my sister-in-law and make sure she got plenty of hugs, and a bit of help with answering ambiguous questions on pensions forms!

Sending (((HUGS))) to MMF, VJsMum and burtha, and everyone else in need. Just been catching up on the thread but i'm very tired and my brain isn't back in gear yet.

nursemaggie i'm absolutely :j :j :j about your good news, and    about the bad. Your council seems to do some very odd things. I hope at any rate that the right house for you comes along very soon indeed!

We got home very late last night. We both had mobility assistance at the airports, and it really saved our bacon as I'm sure we couldn't have managed all the walking that was needed. It was snowing a bit when we arrived over there, but then the weather changed and it was cold but sunny the rest of the time.
I announced my arrival at my sister-in-law's home by somehow managing to trip and measuring my length on her doorstep (it's a very wide doorstep :D) I have some spectacular bruising on my legs and seem to have pulled something in my "good" shoulder, so I now have 2 sore shoulders rather than the one that I left home with, but nothing too dreadful.

Yes government departments do get their wires crossed frequently but they never ever admit they could ever be wrong. I would have some savings if it was not for them getting things wrong so often it is unbelievable. They have had thousands of pounds out of me in the last five years. I never owed them anything but they just ignore all appeals they pretend they have never received the letters.

Most of DS's friends of the same age only pay £20 for their keep or nothing at all. He knows exactly what the bills are.

They also told me last year that DS could never be asked to pay more than half the rent. They appear to thing he is his legal obligation to pay all of the bills plus about 12 % extra. He is paying his way. I was expecting them to say he has to pay some of the rent not all of it plus an extra 12 %. He pays for his food and a little towards the other bills. He will start paying the internet bill when we move. It would be stupid to addle him with a whole years bill because we are moving and cannot commit to a 12 month contract.

I thought that mar ate the elephant months ago.
  • NM it was the jelly babies that Mar ate!
    Chin up, Titus out.
  • When my dd was on benefits they took the whole of my 16 year old dgs wages into consideration before awarding her any help. Said it was income into the house however old he was.
All that clutter used to be money

Great news from the medics nursemaggie, so nice to hear some good news.

We had a little girl in our school who had leukemia and had treatment for 2 years. The treatment caused her knees to collapse and she lost her hair twice. Anyway, she has now left but her Mum phoned me at school the other day to say she has had metal plates put in her legs and will have knee replacements when she is a bit older and the best bit is that they did a lumbar puncture while she was sedated and she is all clear. I have to admit that I cried.

Really cold here but no snow yet, hoping it stays away.

NM good to hear about the cancer :j, bit of a b**ger about the money hike. Hope they've got it wrong. They do sometimes, tried it on with MiL saying she hadn't paid enough rent. As she had already moved into a nursing home at the time because she had dementia, they were trying to collect some money from the previous year. Anyway we tied them up in knots for months with letters going to and fro, until we quoted their rules back at them. citing time constraints. We never heard any more from them. If they ignore you send them a letter through registered post, so you know they have received it, then also get your local councillor involved, he should act on your behalf.
I must thank you all for your lovely comments for the little boy and also some of your recovery stories. I think it will be a long and hard road for him but I hope that it has been caught early. You are a very special bunch of sweet and kind "fencers ".
By the way when you have finished with the heffalump, please could you send it my way. I have a Dad who needs sitting on  ( see the daily thread for details ).
    Take care and stay warm.

Well we drove on the snowy roads for a few miles and then it was not too bad. Visited dad and he spent the whole time complaining that we were not helping him (ie, we would not drive him home). Mum got really upset and I sent her out while I calmed dad down a bit, for a ,short time.
His lovely nurse also chatted to him to explain again that he is too ill to be at home atm.

He ended our visit by telling us we might as well 'just go because we had done nothing for him'. This can be interpreted as 'he cannot get his own way' and as we have done everything within our power to make him comfortable, feed him, chat to him etc, we have to remain calm and I can cope with this, although I was very upset that his final words to mum might well be that she has done nothing for him when she has spent years running round after him despite being so ill herself.

Tomorrow we shall face it all over again.

I am try to convince myself that he is saying these things because he is so ill.

Can I borrow the elephant to cheer me up? I have a joyful image of feeding it buns!
I have changed my work-life balance to a life-work balance.
  • Quick post from me been a long couple of weeks . I'll catch up tomorrow .

VJsmum I'm so sorry to read your news and wish you strength in this difficult time x

MMF Stay safe in this weather . Your dad sounds an amazing character . G&T through a straw :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

NM I'm so glad to read your news . All those long journey's were worth the pain and exhaustion . No wonder people from around the world come to The Christie you couldn't have been in better hands , long may their wonderful work continue .

HB and CT . As a voluntary adviser I don't deal with that much more disability claims . As you're probably aware already it is a very complex situation depending on whether protected ( council or certain HA properties ) or private rentals . There are lots of variations in different areas with different rules .
Your son will be classed as non-dependant as a working adult and normally be responsible for a part of the rent and council tax as depending on his income the onus is on him to pay his share .
It gets complicated if you have DLA with certain criteria or other benefits yourself although DLA or PIP are not means tested .
It is difficult to access much advice quickly from CAB etc as they are snowed under with disability claim problems and the UC rollout .
For now I would recommend posting the problem on the benefits forum . There are some really helpful people over there who are or have worked in those departments . There are others who help with claims and have more knowledge than I do in those two areas .

Google Housing Executive . There is a lot of information on there which may clarify some points for you .

Sending warm , gentle hugs to the ill , worried and sleepless .

If anyone spots that poor elephant with or without the young student escorting it back from OZ please take it to a secure and caring sanctuary . Do we really need to set off to search for Mar in this weather as she goes on the hunt ?
Exception granted to MMF who will feed it rather than shove it in the oven .

Take care all , stay warm .
