MrsCD said:Polly, This looks like the sort of thing you're looking for.... You can play CDs and DVDs on it, and you don't have to use the other functions if you don't want to.
If you want to record programmes on freeview you'll need a different HDD recorder type DVD machine.
Hope this helps a bit.

I'm not too bothered about recording at the moment. There is a humax box under the tv bought at the same time as the tv.For some unknown reason my son installed the tv through the Humax box but doesn't remember why. They're both 13 or 14years old but tv a sony is fine but Humax and Sony had a disagreement and Humax withdrew support for the box and it stopped recording.I've been told if I remove the Humax box tv will stop working. Although it wont record anymore the box displays the tv channel time etc and it's remote is needed to change channels and switch the tv on and off. TV one is screen settings ,volume etc.I'd get a dvd /cd player like I used to have but would need to remove the Humax box and don't know that would go.I like the idea of being able to watch dvds on the laptop as I'm not confined to one room. I'll have a look at your link. I doubt there'll be much worth watching on TV this winter except for A House Through time so I'm trying to think ahead and keep the black dog at bay.pollyxIt is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

I have a very similar gadget to the one @MrsCD has posted the link to. I got it mainly so that I could use Autoroute with my netbook when we were on holiday (which tells you how long I've had it!!) as we don't have SatNav; but it's also good for playing films/CDs when your lappy doesn't have a tray for them, or if you're working on something on the lappy which needs the tray but want a bit of background entertainment as well.

Strictly speaking the humax box won't stop the tv from working, but you will lose your freeview if it's being channeled through that. If you're not bothered about freeview, you can take the box off and go with the original five channels.Taking the box off means purchasing an all singing and dancing tv, or a secondhand flatscreen one and a set top box of some kind or a separate set top box.My sister recently purchased a new smart tv for the shelf in the kitchen where she watches tv, not a huge one, I think it's 32 or 30 inches and comes with a dvd player installed, I paired it with the wifi for her and she absolutely loves it, pausing live tv willy nilly...freeview comes as standard with those..Ask on the techie forum for advice...Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi7

Polly have you explored podcasts? Knitting or travelling or anything you like.

I have an @mazon fire stick, which plugs into the HDMI socket on the tv. I use it in the kitchen, and it allows me to watch all the iplayers for different tv stations....BBC, itv, channel4,5, uktv etc. We took it on holiday and as we have Prime, I watched various films on an evening with my dad, after DH had to go home with DD. It might be worth looking at, Polly. I got mine in a sale and paid £30 for it.
Just wondering, would your tv work if it had the aerial cable plugged in directly, then the tv reprogrammed? Now that we're not using analogue I'm just wondering if it would work that way.2025 Fashion on the ration

Wow, TV sounds horrendously complicated these days; I can turn ours on and off, and that's about it! It's not even a fancy one, just a bog-standard dumb (as opposed to Smart) 32" flat screen.I let Mr Wolf programme the wretched thing - we record anything we want to watch so that we can fast-forward through the ads, and if he's selected something really dross or mega-boring, he uses headphones while he watches it.I wouldn't know a fire stick or a humax box if they got up and bit me!If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)8

Busy here on the countdown to the craft fayre.
Made some goody packs.
Been putting details on local social media and contacted the mayor who supports The Salvation Army.

Me neither LW. In fact a lot of conversations these days float right over my head. I just wave them goodbye. I have everything I want in TV and computerland, I don't need any more complications in my life. I know I'm a dinosaur, but a very happy dinosaur.
I'm sorry that I'm not around much at the moment. In between looking after my old friend I am also catering for a funeral wake next Thursday, so every moment that I can spare I am either shopping or cooking.
I've not been helped by the fact that my trusted old Salter scales have finally given up the ghost. They don't owe me a penny as they've been in almost daily use for the past 40+ years. They must have been one of the first electronic scales around.
Anyway, tomorrow I will take the bus to town and see what they have to offer.

Oh goodness Monna, of all the times for your scales to give up the host! Could you get away with just a new battery for them?
Apologies if that's not the problem, it's just occurred to me that their original battery is unlikely to have lasted for 40 years.6 -
Thanks Ivy. The first thing I did was to renew the battery, but the dear old machine had obviously weighed its last ounce of flour.
Today it will be replaced. I hope.
No time to gossip here as apart from looking after my old friend and cooking up a storm for the wake next Thursday, someone has kindly reminded me that I volunteered to decorate a window for Harvest Festival on Sunday.
I'm wondering how far I can make a bunch of sunflowers stretch.
Next time volunteers are called for I'm sewing my lips together and tying my arms to my sides.
