Isn't it a shame that by the time we get to an age where we want to know more about our family, there is often nobody left to ask. I have nobody at all left, and so many things I'd like to know.

Don't stop Polly. It is all very interesting. I love to hear people's stories, they match any novels and have the advantage of being absolutely true.
I wish I had listened more attentively to my Dad's stories of his family. I remember quite a lot, but I know I've forgotten more.
When I was with the Rev, she always said that everyone should try to write down their life stories because she had conducted quite a lot of funerals where there was no one left who knew the deceased well enough to say anything about them.
I've been urged by my DIL to write my stories down for the grandchildren. I'll do it one day.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Let everything happen to you.

My granny was one of the Herring Lassies, who travelled up and down the east coast working with the fishing boats. She met a man in Lowestoft and took him home to Fife with her and married him. My grandad, who went on to own a boat out of Pittenweem.

Just found this on google - it was my granny who taught me to knit, when I was 4 and staying with her for a while as my mum was ill.
"Rations for the girls comprised bread, soup, vegetables and fish. Many of the girls were well educated, as were the Scots fishermen, although some of the girls from the North and the Scottish Isles could only speak the Gaelic. When not working the girls were often seen strolling about the town, sometimes singing, sometimes chatting amongst themselves, and constantly knitting."

What a lovely jellypus! I think they give them to preemie babies as the tentacles remind them of the umbilical cord and help to comfort them.
I once saw something about the herring girls where they were all singing and knitting together. They recreated it on Outlander. Yet more amazing, inspirational women!2025 Fashion on the ration

I'd love to know more about my grandmother's family, apparently her father was a champion sculler, him and his wife were wined and dined to the extent that became alcoholics. Her older sister was reputed to be a governess at one time to King Faisal's children. I've searched on the internet at various times but Scottish details are hard to find
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle8
