In my son's village they had a very traditional May Day celebration every year. May Queen with attendants, St George fighting the Dragon, Maypole dancing, the lot.
One year the rain came down in stair rods. Being British they carried on regardless.
One of my granddaughters was a May Queens attendant sitting on the back of the decorated lorry and looking very bedraggled.
The other one was the back half of the Dragon.
I felt very sorry for the Maypole dancers. They were all wearing wellies and every time they put a foot down a bit hard the liquid mud spurted up over the tops of their boots. By the end of the dance the Mudlarks weren't in it. You couldnt tell boys from girls and the Maypole was mud from top to bottom.
Everyone had a wonderful time.I believe that friends are quiet angels

Never had a maypole but remember mum shouting us to the door to see the horses (milkman's, coal man's and rag and bone man's) in all their finery. My mission in life is not only to survive, but to thrive and to do so with some Passion, some Compassion, some Humour and some Style.NST SEP No 1 No Debt No mortgage9

I've just lost a long post. I wish the cursor would behave itself . I'm using a mouse at the moment but that's just had a hissy fit. I wish Nuatha was still on the forums . I do miss him.So briefly shortened version.A blog I used to follow daily for years. Bealtaine Cottage. Seeing Wolfie and Hester here reminded me of it. life got busy and in time I forgot about it. I'll check tomorrow if it's still running.Colette O'Neill moved to the west of Ireland, took on a broken down cottage and I think 4 acres of land. She barely had any money but with hard graft she created a beautiful life, home and garden. Last time I was following it she was on the home run after years of hard work , exhaustion and some inspired ideas. She was a real make do and mender. She is also a Pagan so her efforts were focued on living gently on the earth , respecting the earth and mother nature. If it's still on line I recommend taking a look . It's not about throwing money at something or getting into debt. It's doing what you can with what you have or can find in your surroundings and creating something both beautiful and productive without having an impact on the planet.I hope you both had a lovely day Silvasaver. It's actually cooled down here so after two sleepless nights I'm hoping for sleep.pollyxIt is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

Bealtaine Cottage is alive and well on fb & youtube, she posts most days.

She does. THough you need to set aside a while to watch the videos. She's done an amazing thing. I keep considering (but never actually) buying her books...I wanna be in the room where it happens9

When I first started following her blog it was just written posts. No you tube or videos. I've had another hardly any sleep night here. I may have brought back the summer of 76. Don't worry if I suddenly disappear I'll have gone into hidiing fromthe overheated friends hunting me down brandishing rolling pins. I can run to the shop for bags of jelly babies but no idea how to hold the rest of you at bay. I say run I'll be crawling there praying I don't melt on the way.I have been watching a couple of the videos. She has a lovely calm gentle voice and the ability to laugh at herself. I'm so glad I rememmered Beltaine Cottage. She was working on the first book when I was last reading her blog and have wondered from time to time what the book and the following one are like. It's nice to see her wandering about and laughing at her loopy dog, The cat is more dignified.I'm a great believer the book is always best . It costs me nothing to watch the videos but she has a living to earn so I may see if can find the info on the books. I remember when she was writing the first one she mentioned payment in Euros . Living in the Irish Republic she's lucky to still be in the EUwhen dd1 was running the Irish Republic for Waterstones her purse was always full of Euros that worked well when she was in Holland for a while too. I've led a very sheltered life in comparison.I must get a cold drink before I melt!pollyxIt is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

I wish I was in Ireland and that's the truth. I like her garden and her voice but sometimes she gets a wee bit too precious over the Goddess stuff for me. But that's my problem, not anything wrong with her. I much prefer books as well, canny get totally into videos or films. I didnt know there were books.Plans today are sticking fast to this recliner and got a couple of good books beside me here, "Waiting for Hitler" and "The Home Front" - so will be steeped in WW2 all day. Might make me get on with the knitting9

Morning fencers, another hot day here but I'm not complaining, Beano's had his first walk, Steve's still in bed, he's safer there as I'm less likely to throw him overboard!
DD2 was supposed to be collecting Steve's prescription but now can't as she's been pinged, so it means two trains and a bus each way to collect it. It will get worse the further we travel.
I've not managed any crochet for a few days as coping with Steve has taken all my time and energy. His current obsession is the solar and he's running the engine for hours every day and then complaining that he's ruining the engine!
I follow Collette O'Neill, she's very interesting.

Oh Hester, what a pain having to travel all that way on public transport on such a hot day too. You'll be exhausted! Any chance you can stop off somewhere for a breather and a cuppa? Whereabouts on the canal are you now?Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle9
