    How could this have happened?

    Simple answer - It couldn't ..

There HAS to be more to this than you are telling us.
For example, how did you/the assistant know that it was the previous customer who had paid ?
Short of calling them back and checking their card number ?

There is no physical mechanism where this can have happened in the way you describe.

Since this happened i was told that a contactless in a bag or pocket can pay for items if the person walks close enough to a paying device.

You really shouldn't believe everything you are told. Is extremely unlikely someone would keep their car right at the wedge of those bag and then place it onto a contactless reader at the right time to make payment. In your pocket is even more unlikely because the readers are never placed at pocket level.

Also like other have said there is no possible way a previous shopper could have paid for your shopping by contactless.

No my card expiry is next year.

But my other bank sent me a new card this week and it is a contactless card. When i called them to say i did not want a contactless and could they send a replacement, they informed me that they no longer make non-contactless cards. I will not be using this new card or the bank it came from.
Foil hats and heads in the sand everyone!
  • you have to be fairly close to the reader for it to register your card... yes, there are scammers who can 'skim' your card details but they have to be pretty close - as in 'get out of my personal space and stop touching me' close for this to happen. it's mainly in busy places like the tube or london streets where someone brushing against you is normal, that you would have to worry about this. even then, it's not a wide spread issue. and you can just get rfid blockers for your wallet.

someone walking past the till would not pay for your shopping.

Why would you state that this did not happen?

    Are you a troll?

you seem to be extremely negative.

I stated it because you posted this in July and have just come back now, saying "it happened". Well that's me completely unconvinced anyway.

Am I a troll? Well if you compare my posting record to yours then the evidence does point towards trolling, I'll grant you.

Negative - you can call me sceptical if you want to throw adjectives around. Let me spell it out. I don't believe you. Some proof or, as they say, it didn't happen.
  • It's not possible. There is a proximity limit on a sensor. Must be a software glitch

Maybe it was your other new card that made the payment?
You can wrap your cards in tin foil or buy a rfid purse to prevent unintentional payments.
Thank you, but no i haven't taken the new card out of the house and as it is contactless i will not be using it.

I know it is hard for people to believe this happened by the comments here, but it is also insulting to read so many negative comments of disbelief.

This happened the way i said it did so please stop being negative. If you don't believe it then there is no problem just move on.

I came on here to give information about something that happened to me and thought it would help others too. I thought my experience would help as a reminder for people to check their bank statements

It can happen because it did happen.

I was given the receipt for my purchase and it had someone else's card number.

The explanation was given by the manager of the store as to how this happened.

I did not pay for the purchase, it was not on my bank statement.

If you don't believe this happened then move on and keep your negative comments to yourself
