5 OS pleasures in your day today - part 3

- Such a lovey day yesterday and I'd booked it as a day off and to meet an old friend for lunch - we sat outside, it was lovely
- Spent a bit of time sorting compost bins, I bought 2 last year on a cheap deal from the council but am still working on making usable compost
One of the bins had become a storage place for sticks and twigs so I'm getting to grips with these and chopping and adding some to the compost bin in use, then once the spare one is empty I'm going to switch and start using it and let the other bin mature/turn into compost (hopefully!! I keep trying and trying to improve so after failing on and off for 30 years, it must work soon!!)
- Jo Nesbo book which was a holiday swap from the hotel has got really good, can't put it down
- Lots of work coming in which is good, hopefully the very lean period is on its way out
- Nearly the weekend:D

You just need to get the mix right of brown and green. I don't find the compost bins great because you can't turn it, so it takes longer to compost down.
Sticks and twigs will take much longer to compost so try shredding them, or just burn them and put the ash on the compost.

Totally agree on the husband Frith why didn’t he try to learn some skills and help?
Wednesday pleasures,
Thanks to the smelly attributes of Tiger Balm on my poorly knee I managed to sleep through.
Very warm and sunny day.
Thanks to #1 I managed to get a decent amount of groundwork into pony, she was a little star.
There is nothing so seasonal as driving through country lanes with leaves fluttering down.
Made a quick apple and red onion chutney to go with pork escalopes.0 -
Yesterday (Wednesday) I had a great day out with two friends visiting from Australia.
1) We visited 4 locations from the Outlander tv series.
Midhope Castle - " Lallybroch"
Blackness Castle - "Fort William"
Linlithgow Palace - " Wentworth Prison"
Callendar House- " Belhurst Manor"
2) The Historic Scotland staff at the last 3 locations were all so pleasant and knowledgeable about the the Outlander series and more than happy to chat. Midhope Castle is derelict but even the gatehouseman was really friendly. I feel this is so important when visiting with friends from abroad.
3) At Blackness we met two young women from Israel who were also visiting the Outlander locations. They had been all over Scotland and loved our country. Not so keen on the weather though - but who can blame them. We gave them a lift to Linlithgow.
4) Back to my home for a very Scottish dinner. Chicken stuffed with haggis and wrapped in bacon served with whisky sauce, tatties, carrots and neeps then rhubarb crumble and ice cream.
5) Then a lovely couple of hours blethering about absolutely everything you can imagine. Can't wait for their next visit in 3 or 4 years.Debt free - Mortgage free - Work free ( in that order)

Thanks, I've got the plastic beehive ones and I agree, you can't turn well because of the narrow opening. Over the years I've had 2 open heaps (at different houses) and a metal one and given up each time, but I'm determined to succeed this time, and cut down on waste, so guess I'm stuck with what I've got now.
I'm putting all my fruit and veg waste into it and my mission is to cut down what goes in the landfill bin. I did start off shredding, but the shredder is old and kept jamming and cutting out so in the end I just snapped or cut the sticks small. I might try burning on the fire pit though, that's what I'm going to do with the larger sticks now I've cancelled the garden waste subscription
My problem is it going slimy ( too much green I know) as a lot of grass cuttings go in, so I've started leaving the cuttings from the front lawn on the lawn, but can't do that out the back as the dogs would track it into the house!
I leave the cuttings in a wheelbarrow for a while to dry out (weather permitting!) and add scrumpled paper and card and really I'm hoping it'll work this time - everything crossed!
Thanks for the tips:)
Sorry for the compoting war and peace0 -
My Five for yesterday:
1. Managed to get the 'early Shuttle Bus' for my early appointment, so arrived in plenty of time - even managed a coffee while in waiting area :j.
2. HOORAY - at long last, my 'wound' has healed over (16wks after surgery) sufficient for them to tell me to leave the dressing off for now ........................... but keep watching it for signs of 'moistness from within'. If in any doubts, to contact the Orthopaedics Ward for a visit - but next appointment in 6wks :j :j.
3. Back on the bus and off to collect Nathan for a trip into the town centre for lunch in Wetherspoons. He's good company when you get him in 'the right mood' - and he loves 'taking the mick out of me', which I don't mind. Finally got him to have something 'other than sausages/pizza' :T - Lasagne! I had the Quinoa Salad with Halloumi and Sweet Chilli Sauce .
4. Shopping for Birthday Card for DGS2 (17 tomorrow) - why are teenage boys so hard to choose cards for ......................... don't want to get 'soppy Grandson ones' OR 'vulgar/crude ones' - so had to scour through the 'clean comic ones'.
5. DD arrived back home early this afternoon, so I managed to get home at a reasonable time to cook omelets for evening meal
6. Settling down with my soaps was the final blessing of the day ................... oooh Emmerdale is getting good and can't wait for tonight's episode !0 -
V Ripped around last day to scoop BoPsie up from her salt mine and to the dentist. It is not good news! BoPsie is still with chill!
4 Watched the speedway agins. All over now! Soon be games night and live Scrabble. We use the 99 edition so no stupid real words like!
3 Wes out of penguins and clubs, so proper chocolate digestives today, with cheese and another snorker. Proper foods!
2 Millwrights customer is in town today, so we have cleared the debris from the mill pound and put up nice posters about him!
Having another one today! Seems the PLDs in Cambridge think we celebrate on 11th of the 11th! I would clap but it could offend!
Don’t forget to remove evil tack from the shelves.
And that is your BoPiness for today!0 -
1) Really good day yesterday wrangling those Grandpickles who were very good boys for us.
2) both boys very good about bath time and in bed fast asleep without any squawking or argument by 8 O clock.
3) Had their mums supper ready and on a tray as she came back from the meeting at 9.15 so she could just relax, poor woman works too hard as she's been DIYing most of the day too.
4) We've been offered an allotment!!!
5) We'e been to visit it, walked the bounds, jumped up and down with excitement and been to the council offices and paid the years rental! We've got a shed with a beautiful established grape vine growing around it, laden with perfectly ripe grapes, a plum tree, a damson tree, an established asparagus bed and globe artichokes too. Most of the rest of the plot is a riot of strawberry plants and some old raspberry canes and currant bushes which will have to go but HWK is happy and when HWK is happy so am I, we're really, really lucky!0 -
My five pleasures for today are;
1) Fried leftover potatoes from yesterday for lunch. Absolutely delicious on bread and butter with brown sauce.
2) Decluttered and organised a large cupboard in my bedroom. I thought " outside the box" and can't believe the difference from before.
3) A great chat with fellow knitters at my knitting group this afternoon although I'm having to rip back my work as I wasn't paying attention and didn't notice a mistake.
4) I enjoyed my meditation group from 6.30 to 7.30.
5) last episode of the Press - I hope they make a second series.

Pleasures for today (Thursday).
1) Not a bad sleep but disturbed by bigger son coming in at 3am.
2) Got various jobs done round the house and fed the hens.
3) The door man appeared and measured the front door properly. It is an odd size (of course) so will take 4 weeks to make and be fitted.
4) Went to our local farm shop to have a cup of tea with my sister.
5) Then went out for lunch with mum, dad and my brother!
6) Applied for a job (most work on the application done in the library yesterday).
7) A very tasty beef goulash for tea.
8) Watched the summing up episode of the Island with bigger son.0
