at risk of sounding like a broken record, another tuff day at work. so good things are...
1) invited phd student from Oman to open office advent calendar. He opened window 20. I guess how an advent calendar works is cultural 🤣I didn't say anything of course, opened 4, put 4's chocolate behind 20, closed 20, job done!
2) eVisa done for Thailand -very quick and easy
3) chat with colleague about using a situation to her and another colleague's mutual advantage
4) extraordinary meeting of local community group - very good then we settled into having a good chat - 2 of the 8 have been widowered this year - we raised a glass and reminisced (including the sad tale or tail of mousey)
5) dd2 had a fabulous evening at the Usher Hall - Scottish Chamber Orchestra, niece was playing and they met for lunch first. Was lovely to hear her so enthused by the evening - I am a sucker for Tchaikovsky!20*25 for 2025: 489 / 5006 -
For yesterday,
A quiet day after the busyness of the two previous, trip into horsey town for a shop and a coffee with pal.
Home in time to hear Joe R get his century, ROOOT!
A few more decorations and twinkly lights put, this time in the hearth, closer to Yule I will bring in some green.
The weather was urgh with heavy rain and the horses were in. Apart from when we were on really sandy soil in the Brecks we’ve always had to deal with muddy fields and my girlie quite enjoys a duvet day. We did a few carrot stretches and took the time to trim up the hair around her fetlocks etc.
Laughing at QI and then caught up with Shetland, the new Jimmy Perez novel is on my festive wish list.6 -
Out early to CP we had a very nice nature walk.Diverted to garden centre to pick up a scone.
Drove home on motorway. First time going that way in new car.Worky work and sent off my words.
I have visitors. Who have arrived with lots of their stuff.Finished watching a nice film on iPlayer about The Waltons. Nice happy ending!
Chat to sister.
It is wild outside. Really windy. And cold.6 -
Pleasures for today (Friday)
1) Not a bad sleep.
2) My friend got Leave to Remain! He had to wait just over 4 years. Now he is finally allowed to get a job.
3) Went to coffee morning and took a birthday present for my chess partner.
4) Had some pear pie at coffee morning, made by another local using cooking pears grown by my brother.
5) Survived another shift at work. Today's telling off was because we sold out. I should have forseen that we would sell out and cooked more food in advance, even though I wasn't even at work during the morning. I must try harder...
I did find 2 excellent stocking fillers while I was at work so it wasn't a completely wasted afternoon.
6) Watching television this evening.
7) Sainsbury's order coming later.
ETA 8) Had another happy email from Joan Bakewell!5 -
For yesterday,
TMS, listening to the cricket and all the ups & downs of the game.
Visit to the GC in the village and found a couple of festive decorations and had enough points on my loyalty card to pay for them in full, no changeable theme here just bits and pieces picked up over the years.
We decided on our main present to each other, tickets to see Death on the Nile at the Cambridge Arts next May.
Afternoon with my horse, the wind was bitter out in the paddocks and whilst her body felt warm enough in a rug her ears were cold bless her so fetched in, washed muddy legs off and got her settled in the stable. Catch up with fellow owner.
Home and a parcel of SH books had arrived in the mail so the TBR pile reassuringly high again.6 -
Morning all.
Grey and damp here, perfect weather for not doing a lot, hunkering down and keeping warm.
Recent pleasures:
1) Some quiet days after a busy time mentally and physically. Recent sadnesses and the anniversary of my mum's birthday on Wednesday have left me in pensive mood this week so a gentle time has been much appreciated.
2) My brother has bought the annual Christmas wreath and will take to the churchyard so my mum and dad will be part of our Christmas too. I can't bring my self to go back quite yet so am very grateful that he is happy to go, keep things neat and tidy and plant the spring bulbs they loved so much.
3) Spending time with middle grandson has been a comfort to us both, his pal's funeral is on Friday next week.
People taking the time and trouble to reach out to us has been a huge comfort, there are some amazing people in this world.
4) Really enjoying the Christmas tree this year, the lights are cheering and the baubles from my very first Christmas are so fragile now but so special. They have seen many Christmases and hold a lot of memories.
5) Debating whether to make another Christmas cake. We broke into ours last weekend at the family do and have been nibbing it since. Very delicious but very nearly gone but can our waistlines cope with the temptation of another one? Hmmm...
Have a good weekend, whatever you are up to.5 -
Good afternoon. Weather here is changing every five minutes. So it's heavy rain followed by bright sunshine and same againl And very mild too.
Not very much happening here but that's good news. Lots of pre-Christmas prep but I've decided the best way is a bit at a time. It seems to be working as I've now bought most of the presents, written all the cards and made some of the food. I've even put up some decorations and twinkly lights but the tree is a real one so it's not coming inside until next weekend. It's good to feel quite calm about it.
Wreath making tomorrow with DD so that can be the official start of Christmas.
Went to town yesterday for a haircut. Virtually the only time I venture into town. There seem to be more closed shops than open ones so it's quite depressing. And now M+S has closed its even worse. It's sad really as it used to be a very busy shopping centre with an excellent market.
Still got present wrapping to tackle! Not my favourite job so I might make a start this afternoon. Maybe half an hour with something good on BBC sounds in the background.
Have a happy weekend everyone

Already posted an hour ago, but all disappeared.
Nothing new in that, so reposting from What's App🤞.From up on The Gallops -1. Three different times on 3 different notice sheets for 2 clashing church events today. So, 'The History of our Christmas Carols', with humour, history, singing, great music, fabulous baking and drinks began at 1030h. Really terrific and big turnout. Then raced for end of Christmas Fair in another benefice church. Some stallholders had already left, but & bought tickets for fabulous Christmas hamper. Also had some lovely cards and stationery, another fatal draw for &.🙂↔️2. & heard her name and wondered why. Still can't believe it! & has won the
wonderful hamper!3. It will be much shared/handed on.😃4. Ate these 2 final, very late raspberries.😋
5. &'s Saint's day was also double Christmas Quiz day, with & able to supply winning answer, re: NZ's 'Christmas tree', thus christened by early European missionaries. It's the glorious Pohutukawa and they're looking like this right now.
