  • UPDATE; Just went out into my kitchen - and now I know I definitely deserve a bottle of beer. I found ants and flying ants in my kitchen - again - the second time within the last month.

Just stamped on them/hoovered them all up/etc - and I'm off for my beer...

I shall be glad when these "I deserve a reward and/or compensation" moments stop - it will surely help my diet.

I saw 2-3 flying ants outside just last week - they're rarely seen. Maybe there's a "plague" of them this year.

My parents have been plagued in the last week or so in the conservatory. I heard on Radio 4 last week that it was peak Flying Ant Day, apparently they are rife for about 10 days at this time of year.

I know they aren't dirty like flies but it always makes me feel itchy and as though the room they have invaded is dirty.
  • That's the trees pruned, spotted more ripe blackberries whilst doing it, guess what is for pud? With ice cream

Always know when the ants fly here, the gulls start circling like vultures

Our peak ant day was about a week back, with all the thundery humidity

Eating the sweet chilli chicken thighs. I think I'll never eat thigh meat again. Unless it's thoroughly de-skinned and de-boned and picked through before I cook it .... I am not sure I like the texture of it.

Taste is fine, just mentally having to deal with the horror of possibly eating a small piece of skin I'd not managed to spot and get out.
  • Elsewhere on the Internet people are complaining about the flying ants this year in a variety of locations - so I guess it's a particularly bad year for them.

In process of cleaning up the kitchen right now - and I think I've found the source of the standard floor level ants getting in twice this year. Namely a hole at base of skirting board on the outside wall of my larder. Cause = well it was probably there anyway - but the decorator that decorated my recently-done larder hadn't filled said hole in before decorating. Grrrrr.....and I've been calling him a lot of names under my breath:mad:. Fortunately the bit of skirting board concerned has a storage box of mine sitting on the floor in front of it. I've finished his job for him in bodger fashion - there's a bit of blutack put right where he should have put filler now then and mental note made of "10 years time - when I get this redecorated - must remember to tell (different) decorator to fill that hole properly".

Now ruefully thinking about the way my spending priorities (according to a newspaper article this week) are different to the vast majority of British people (think it was 98% of most people and even 50% of rich people). Apparently most of us arent prepared to spend money to make life easier and that still applies to 50% of rich British people.

My mind was boggling whilst reading that article - as that's precisely why I employ workmen. Me - I'll employ workmen even for jobs I could do myself personally:rotfl:. I guess that's down to what another poster on here called me having "Armed Forces clean/tidy" standards (I blame my ex Armed Forces parents for that:rotfl:) on the one hand BUT I loathe doing anything I don't want to do (yep...that includes DIY/housework/etc) myself and the end conclusion of that particular combination = I'm in that 2% of us that will pay people to "make life easier" for me and, if I were rich, then I'd probably pay people to do every single thing for me that I don't actually want to do. Yep.....I expect I'd even give a list of my measurements to a suitable person and my likes/dislikes and pay them to go out and do my clothes shopping for me too:rotfl:In my dreams - oh well:rotfl:

There's method in my madness. Things get done - but I'm not the one that has to do them. Makes perfect sense to me:)

Hence the disappointment whenever I have to "follow" after workmen and make their jobs good myself and/or employ other workmen to do so.

Oh well...back to more kitchen cleaning and daydreams of "If I won the Lottery......":rotfl:

I thought there was yet another survey out this week that said money makes you happy, because you can employ someone to do the jobs you don't want to

Sounds like moneyistooshorttomention and me are in this category, not the rich one, but happy to pay someone else to do it if possible. I do

While picking the blackberries I spotted loads of red currants just going past it, so picked them as well, could be Summer pudding, or more likely go out and pick up the windfall apples that I knocked off during pruning and make a lovely crumble for tomorrow, note to self, get some thick yoghurt in tomorrow

  • Please can I join if you have room for 1 more. I think living on your own makes you a bit obsessive with foods and (it's been said before but) it's entirely different to cooking for 2 or more.

I read this board a lot for cooking inspiration and feel like people say things that I think in my head and I always get the feeling "it's not just me". Very nice page. xx

    Good evening everyone,
SunnyG - sounds as though you had a lovely birthday meal:D
Slinky - welcome to the thread:)
The weather has been lovely here today so I've spent most of the day lounging in the garden. After a dodgy start, I got up for the loo and promptly fell over (no major injuries though my dignity was a bit bashed), I decided that if the new meds are going to sideswipe me I may as well feel !!!! in the sunshine!;)

Breakfast was the usual toast and lunch some of the salad I made yesterday, I was planning to make a sort of ratatouille bake tonight but don't know I cba doing the prep so might just have a freezer rake:)
