    Hi tawecdl,

Found your thread as I'm going through a similar situation with my ex and our 11 year old son who started yr7 last Sept.

She's adamant that home schooling is the 'best' for him, and, like you, I'm concerned about the quality of the education being provided and the lack of social activities. He's not been to school all of the spring term, but she's not formally withdrawn him yet by sending the letter to the school.

I wondered how you've got on with your situation, did you get your daughter back into school in September or have you started any proceedings otherwise?

I think tough love is needed here. Next time you are with your daughter you need to take her down to the nearest Aldi or Lidl for a walk around. Find the most heavily tattooed, knuckle dragging member of staff and point them out to your daughter and inform her that if she doesn't change her mind on this home schooling then that will be her career highlight if she is lucky.

At least they are working, snob comes to mind.

If the boy is still registered at the school, then both the school and the LEA's education welfare officers should be involved to ensure he is receiving an education. Have you spoken to them?

Once a deregistration letter has been sent, then the school no longer has any input but the EWO may seek to establish what eduction your son is receiving. As mentioned above, a formal visit can be refused, with the parent/s choosing to provide an educational philosophy instead, outlining the education their child is receiving. This is the route I took as I didn't feel a visit from the LEA was necessary.

When children are first removed from school, there may be a period of deschooling, followed by either an autonomous education, semi-structured or formal and families often find what suits them.

With regards socialising, that was my biggest worry before taking my children out of school but it turned out to be the least of them as there are always activities going on within the home-ed community.

My biggest regret now, looking back, is that I didn't remove my children from the school system sooner. I can fully understand your concerns. I had them. Most families I know, had them but HE doesn't have to be a negative and depending on why your son has stopped attending school, it could turn out to be the best thing for him.

Well, that was a hiding to nothing, wasn't it? We were not told the rest of the story, as happens far too often on here. Whatever occurred, I hope the OP did not assume responsibility for teaching his child English as his spelling left a great deal to be desired.
