But heres some good sites for you wrt funds and the markets -

    www.digitallook.com - wikid site
    www.citywire.co.uk - nother data site
    www.h-l.co.uk - good discount broker
www.fool.co.uk - good for a natter with fellow fools
    www.iii.co.uk - also good for a argument
www.proshareclubs.co.uk/ - charity setup to assist clubs
www.learnmoney.co.uk - good for the basics
    .

I was aware of most of these. They are websites not forums and they mainly provide daily performance info on individual funds and shares. I already get daily performance info from FT and Yahoo website and i can get background fund info from the companies website etc.

I notice that www.iii.co.uk has forums but they seems to be forums split up into subforums for each individual fund.

With grreat difficulaty i have managed to locate some www.fool.co.uk forums. I had to do a site search to find them and i see they are subdivided into a huge number of sub-forums. The beauty of somewhere like here is that investing is discussed in general under one forum (albeit combined with savings) although splittiing it a bit isnt a bad idea but iii and fool have gone completely over the top in splitting up into a huge number of subforums.

Sounds like a good idea. Someone could always put a sticky on both the Savings board and the Investments board on 'The difference between Savings and Investment' and point people whichever way.

    caliston, thanks for that post.

Until I found myself in a position where I needed to know about money, I can honestly say I didn't realise what the difference between savings and investments were :o and I don't think I'm alone.

As someone who has since struggled to work out what all the acronyms mean, like CAR, NMA, (thanks dunstanh and jem16 ;) and anyone else I've forgotten), would it be possible, if there isn't one that I've overlooked, to have a sticky of what the recurring acronyms mean please?

Even when I've tried to Google, I've got it wrong, example: DIP = Decision in Principle, real meaning: Diploma :o

I'm totally bamboozled by it all.

And lol @ the post m_c_s made. I've noticed their alternating views, and both posters make me look at things from two different directions, but I see this as only a good thing ;)

Although I read the posts, I don't recall ever thanking EdInvestor, so I'll say thanks in this post :)

  • Everybusiness creates its own anacronyms, its so they can sound clever and protect their own job.

If managing directors/lawyers/financiers spoke in english then they would be out of a job as people earning minimum wage would realise that all you need to do is join up and talk rubbish thus making the world would be on minimum wage.

Most oif the equivalent forums on the Fool to MSE are listed here:

    http://boards.fool.co.uk/Boards.asp?fid=5008&bid=51281

The pensions, SIPPs and retirement investing boards are noteable.

    The Investing boards are here:

    http://boards.fool.co.uk/Boards.asp?fid=5007

The Investing for Income and High Yield portfolio boards are popular as is the Value board. Also see the excellent Property Investing section.
    Trying to keep it simple...;)

Thanks but the Fools boards (investing in particular) don't seem terribly inspiring. Some boards havent been posted on for several days. It isnt going to wean me away from here.
  • Maybe you should see a fortune teller if your expecting some sort of miracles or some insider tips that arnt just random hype up.

The man doth expect too much, there announcements and financial reports to comment on, good/bad and theres also the latest bandwagons.

Some of the bandwagons turn out good, most are doomed, marconi, NRK and debtmatters all have had a bandwagon following on the fool, all the way to the poorhouse.

Best thing to do is arm yourself will the tools and take your own calculated risks.

Must admit, investments forms part of my whole portfolio now thanks to this site. Previously I was just saving, now I feel like I'm actively contributing to my moneysaving efforts.

My thoughts are that there are three defined area's we could fit in and move between. All can benefit from moneysaving discussions here.

    1. Debt
    2. Saving
    3. Investing

Perhaps investment doesn't fit the moneysaving ethos, but I'd be upset if I were not welcome here as an investor. We all seem to get on quite nicely so far and can offer advice to people moving 'up the ladder'.

Who would do that if we all jumped ship to some lousy investment site?!!

Looking at the Savings and Investment and ISA fora there's already a fair amount of discussion about investment going on, it's just jumbled up between savings matters and spread across the S&I forum and the ISA subforum. So we're not all going to turn into discussing pork bellies hedge fund derivatives trading but, for example, these sorts of questions are being frequently asked:
    • When should I use the Stocks and Shares component of my ISA?
    • My bank's trying to sell me this investment product - any good?
    • I got some shares from my building society going PLC - what can I do with them?
    • Is there a tax liability if I sell those shares?
    • I want to invest some money for my toddler to be there when he grows up - what are my options?
    • I've just had an inheritance - should I save or invest?
    • Should I buy to let or invest in the stockmarket?
    • My mate's got this hot tip for investing in China/India/gold/oil/Skegness - what do you think?
    • Should I go to an IFA? How do I pick one?
    • If I want to invest in unit trusts, how do I got about finding good ones?
    • I'm interested in currency trading - how do I start?
    • How does spread betting differ from buying shares?

and so on. None of which are likely to set the City red braces twanging, but they're fairly common everyday questions about investment. Such discussion will go on in any case, but it would be useful to have a place where it can happen all together. That makes it much easier to learn by having it in one place where the archives can be read, rather than scattered between the hundreds of threads about savings accounts.

It's also interesting to note that there's also a considerable overlap between these and the Pensions board which doesn't have a problem dealing with cases where there's some degree of risk involved.
  • I think skegness is going to be the next china, its gona rocket i tells ya ;)
