Freesat... sky dish not connected

I've recently moved into my new flat . I've got a sky dish outside my property ( wow!) . I also have cables from that ,that go into my living room ready for connection . I don't want sky, so opted for freesat
So I ordered a humax box from John Lewis , and just plugged it in .

However, when doing what I'm supposed to, there are no channels.
This tells me it has something to do with the dish outside.
I go outside , and it looks like the cables are not connected to the property.
My fault I guess for not double checking .
I've dialled the various numbers and nobody there till Monday .
I'm thinking that it'll probably cost about £100 or so to get connected ?? Is it worth persisting ?
I'm with Vodafone with broadband , just recently joined and don't want to change so soon .
I imagine it'd take a few days for someone to install cable from dish etc.

Please advise

Thanks :)

Is it connected to any other property? Is it easily accessible? Does it have a lnb with cables coming out? Oh and there isn't a sky dish just a satellite dish it may point at another satellite eg eutelsat...
As always more questions than answers:D

    Well... good questions :)
My question , what's an lnb? Needs a ladder for access. There is over growing shrubbery . Not sure if it's connected to another property.
I'm on the ground floor . It looks like cables have been disconnected .

    Thanks :)

I'm wondering what the various numbers you called are? The seller of the Humax box won't be able to do anything, as there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the box. Humax won't be able to do anything, as the box needs a connection to a satellite dish.

You need a satellite dish installer, if you don't feel confident running a bit of cable yourself. Plenty of them about. EDIT - I note you don't know what an LNB is, you definitely need someone to sort out the dish and connection then.

You should be able to see if the dish is pointing in the correct direction for freesat / sky , by looking at others nearby or using the satellitefinder website (google it), I managed to line up my fixed 28E dish for sky and my motorised dish (mostly for Hotbird for RAI) using that site.

You need to be good to work out whether it is pointing to Astra at 28.2 or Eutelsat at 28 by eyesight alone

There is over growing shrubbery .
If the shrubbery is blocking the dish's line-of-sight to the satellite, this is another reason why you might not have channels.

If you can easily remove these plants (or trim them down) it might save you the cost of an installer.

However, if there are no cables connected to the dish then you'll definitely have to have them re-connected and if the dish is connected to another property then you'll need to buy one of your own (assuming next door hasn't simply appropriated it)
  • Thanks folks .
On the website and manual, there are various technical nos. to ring .
Sounds like I'll just have to get it reconnected .
The shrubbery gets cut by the people I pay service charges too .
Normally very good, but I've only been here 3 weeks :)

These will be of no use if you all you lack is a physical connection to a dish.

Call a local CAI registered installer...

Call a local CAT registered installer...

Good idea. Suppose it's best to google ?

Do you mean Eutelsat 28E, 28F and 28G which live at 28.2 degrees East and are actually rented capacity on the Astra 2 satellites? As I can't find anything else in that bit of the sky on lyng.

LNB is the Low Noise Block converter and is clamped in the middle of the arrangement pointing at the satellite dish and converts the signal from the satellite into something that can be decoded by the receiver, in your case the Humax. You will need, as others have said, a local sat dish installer BUT first you need to determine that the dish actually belongs to you/your flat.
