Got it - if there's ONE thing this house has ... it's a gun turret.

    In budget.

But would you be tall enough to reach those high windows in the turret? They're over the stairs.

How did it get like that? Was it built that way from scratch, or did someone carve up the inside rooms and stick a turret on the corner after it was built but still back when planning regulations didn't stop you doing that kind of thing???

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

It's very odd, not least because the windows in the turret are on the stairs (see picture 7). So what is at the top if the turret?

    The roof :p

If you look at the floorplan, you can see that the turret is merely a spiral (or part spiral) staircase linking the ground floor hallway with the upstairs landing.

It's quite a good way of releasing more space inside the house without having to build a normal extension. I doubt it would have been cheaper, though, especially with that lovely roof.

I'm wondering if it was done by a builder who owned the house and wanted to showcase his skills?

Also, given that it's on the coast, it would have been nice for the top of the turret to have been a cupola, so that you could sit there and enjoy the sea view. (Assuming there is a sea view!)

Looking on google earth, there might be a bit of a view from that high up.

It's on quite a busy road, and just a few steps from shops, including a Coop, and a working men's club, so a lot of coming and going, not that that's necessarily a bad thing.

I once lived near a small Coop, and my off-road parking area was always being used by people who wanted to pop into the shop and were 'only there a minute'. Those 'minutes' were usually more like 20mins, and when you multiply it by several people a day, it amounts to apoplexy.

Except that the space where presumably the stairs were is now all corridor so not a great gain. However I do actually prefer streets where the hoses are not all identikit (except for some of those Georgian grand terraces of course) and I reckon that staircase might be ideal for a stairlift....
    I think....

I wouldn't be surprised if that's how it was originally built. In coastal areas in particular you often get unusual "one offs" and it doesn't look like any of the other houses around it, which I'd expect if it were a later modification.

It should have a sloping bit so that you can sit on a sisal mat and helter-skelter down.

Just use a tea tray on the stairs themselves :rotfl:

The roof lifts ... and there's a machine gun :)
