If you find a landscape gardener at work (yes, I know, posh alert), the chances are that they will be throwing out loads of plastic pots.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I need to hire a car in a few weeks time. It needs to be big enough for four adults and quite a lot of luggage. Any idea where is a good place to do that?

Edit: I should have said it will be in London and nearby, not abroad. The MSE advice is all about hiring abroad. :(

Don't worry. You're much younger than my actual mum, who would have been 89 this coming November if she were still alive.

So I am 5.5 years older than you, but your Mum would have been 11 years older than mine!

That would make you younger than all my brothers. I was the last ditch attempt at a girl after 3 boys and several miscarriages.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Thank you to all the NP for birthday wishes. :) I have had a peaceful day and some nice presents, including an extendable dog lead that New Dog and I are going to go and try out shortly. Tomorrow she's seeing the vet in the morning - I'm hoping they'll say she's well enough to be allowed to run about and play with a ball because I think she's going a bit stir crazy from only being allowed gentle walks on the lead.

    Spalling? (too short)

    No, it wasn't that.

It took me several minutes and a lot of brain-racking, but finally got it......delamination.

    Phew! :D

    My simple understanding is:

Spalling is when water gets in and freezes, causing chunks to break off.

Delamination is entirely different. It is when water gets in and freezes, causing chunks to break off.

Oh, hold on a second ....

... I've gone for builder's buckets at 99p each. It's not as if the plants are going to be able to tell the difference once I've drilled some drainage holes ;)

I did that, 70p cheapo buckets and I poked a hole through the bottom ... it works!

I need to get me some "stuff" .... and lob it on.

Years ago I remember, aged about 7, having a flowerpot and covering it with something white, plaster of paris? then sticking shells on it - then lacquering the whole thing.... it didn't last very long before it started falling apart, maybe 1-2 years of not even being used... but there must be something you can "lob on" that'd work.

I needed to buy a pot of fence treatment stuff the other week; last tub was 5 litres and round; this one's bigger and rectangular... I have retained the empty one and got my eye on both of them to "do something, even if I just paint them with the nearest paint for now" ... to use as cheap planters.

I did think about a bit of postcrete.... and a quick layer of sand ... and maybe a few shells/stones or something...

When I think it all through though, I realise that I'd actually just end up making an expensive mess everywhere ... but I like to retain the idea that I'll get round to it :)

Yes, they were. Completely banned in the end.

But, it's now gone to the other extreme.... where cars are bought that most people, who work full-time their entire lives, would never ever be able to ever afford.

Mobility is one thing ..... but there seems to be a disconnect with "what everybody else has the chance to ever get", iyswim.

I know a lot of the excesses were reined in with recent changes etc, but, they are still "staggering" to the majority of people.
