    My simple understanding is:

Spalling is when water gets in and freezes, causing chunks to break off.

Delamination is entirely different. It is when water gets in and freezes, causing chunks to break off.

Oh, hold on a second ....

I've never heard of spalling. Is that chunks falling off? I dunno.

Delamination is when pots flake off in layers, which is different from chunks falling off.
I have had pots which have started to flake in layers, starting with the rim in particular, after icy winters. So I now have a few rimless pots!

The layers that flake can be very thin and sliver-like, a bit like slate.

Even simple wooden "planters" are expensive... when you compare them to the cost of a few old pallets, a hammer and a pack of nails :)

I'm sure a few old pallets would make very stylish planters! :rotfl:

There are some pictures somewhere of planters made out of large bras.
    And old welly-boots.
    Even old loos!

And somewhere there's a recipe for a mixture that painted onto containers will make them look like stone, but I can't remember what that is either.

GDB We've hired a car in this country from Europcar. We were taking it abroad, but that was coincidental. It was a Chrysler Grand Voyager. Loads of space :) We were 4 adults, one teen and lots of luggage.

To use modern terminology ... I'd like "a couple of large and striking statement pieces in the garden.... " .... not bras hanging from the fence when viewers arrive!

    :)

Having said that though .... even if I was given a great pot .... the cost of putting something in it's another massive financial investment!

When I went away recently, just two of us + luggage ... most of the luggage was "camping gear".

As it was my 2nd time I'd honed what I needed - and reduced my luggage footprint. I was feeling very pleased with that ... until I arrived to pick up my companion ... as they'd increased their baggage and equipment quite significantly! I thought it'd never fit.

Yes, they were. Completely banned in the end.

But, it's now gone to the other extreme.... where cars are bought that most people, who work full-time their entire lives, would never ever be able to ever afford.

Mobility is one thing ..... but there seems to be a disconnect with "what everybody else has the chance to ever get", iyswim.

I know a lot of the excesses were reined in with recent changes etc, but, they are still "staggering" to the majority of people.

I do understand what you mean. The trouble is that sometimes a poster on DT, for example, might say grudgingly "Well, I suppose I don't mind, as long as they all have a small, cheap car", not realising (or rather, not thinking at all!) that, for instance, someone tall with spinal problems, or someone with a wheelchair can't get in and out of a small car; or that often a disabled person will benefit hugely from certain specifications (such as a rear-view camera) which just aren't available with the basic level of trim.

ETA Many people nowadays, rather than buying a new car, get one on a lease hire arrangement so they can change it for another new one after three years. Same thing.

I think what "annoys" me is that people are "suckered into it" ... with the sales people benefitting from the sale ... often leaving the person with very little of their mobility allowance to help with other issues they have. Mobility isn't just about a car/going shopping etc ... but little tweaks and adjustments and gadgets and stuff.... if most is swallowed up by leasing a brand new, shiny car ... then 18 months down the line when you need something a bit pricier for some other purpose, you're stuck ... as your money's gobbled up.

Present people with a brochure full of shiny cars and make it "seem easy" ... and they forget that their allowance could be used for other events/gadgets/needs they've not even realised yet.

    IYSWIM.

The world of benefits seems very strange indeed, but that reflects the input of lots and lots of politicians.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

They're dead posh, they are :)

My car cost me "a lot" 8 years ago, £6k.... and my next one will cost not more than £2-3k *fingers crossed* .... not because that's what I'd "choose" to spend on a car, but because that'd be all I could scrape together.

I'll never join the "leasing classes".
