What has happened to all the stuff on your old hard disc?

Well, I do need to get that across to the new PC, but I keep a running list of "things to look up next time ANC's got a freebie on" :)
And now I've a faster PC with spare capacity I might pop in and download things I've not bothered with before ... I don't always bother to download a Census page as a rule - because that was just "unnecessary HD clutter".

When the woman in newbuild 9 is on the phone inside her house, with her door open .... I'm always torn between just listening to her conversation and dropping her a note to say "do you realise that all/any/every house you can see from yours can all hear every single word of every telephone conversation you have?"

Some people just have bl00dy loud voices!

I can hear her and I'm inside my house, with my doors closed.

She's not talking excitedly .... it's just her regular voice.

I'm pretty sure some people are too stupid to understand the principle of the phone and think their voice volume is what propels their message to their listener.

You certainly never hear clever stuff being shouted into a phone.

    This is very true!

Bizarrely, everybody seems to be louder these days ... and the louder they are, the louder the next person has to turn the telly up to drown them out - and the louder the next one has to talk to be heard over the telly ...

I wish I had the "clout" to effectively promote #QuietLife

Some people actually believe "everybody's noisy" as some form of justification that they are noisy. No ... not everybody's noisy ... it's usually just them!! And their family/friends.... under the "birds of a feather" banner. If you complain about, say, their "party that's gone on now for 15 days without a break" they'd say "Yeah... but you cut your grass, that's noisy", not being able to do the maths that 15 days is a lot longer than half an hour once a fortnight :)

I also blame: the over use of alcohol in modern life, as if that's "normal". Years ago, friends/family over, you put the kettle on. Not these days, it's out with the Lambrini/whatever...

If loud is her normal volume, she may be partially deaf.

Perfect timing! I didn't know it is a free weekend, so may spend some time on there myself. An hour in libraryland is never enough.

Probably the sound of the screeching/screaming kids day in day out's done that! :)

No, one hour is realistically just enough to get powered up, logged on, orientated, find the single record you know exists ... load it and look, then shut it all down again :)

Dunno when it starts, to be honest... sometimes these "weekend" things start at midnight on a Thursday... and then there's the issue of "which records" - and your understanding of what you expected to be covered under that banner... but, always, the one you want to look at is classified slightly differently and you still have it outstanding on the "free weekend list to do". With FMP I used to get the newspapers on free weekends ... but they stopped that and now you can only get to those with a paid subscription.

Just looked it up: English/Irish INCLUDING 1939 Register! Although maybe that last bit is a "con" and they just mean you can search the indexes but not see the originals.... we'll have to see.....

My mum's still not coming through on 1939, which is annoying.

6-9 July - so I'll have a look in an hour and a half or so, see if it's originals or not... although the start time on the 6th isn't specified, so maybe 11.59pm tomorrow. "will start on 06 June and be free until 09 June, 2018 at 23:59 BST"

I think it's the virtual bubble syndrome.

Like being in a car, you think you're in your own little world, and maybe forget that there are windows all around it!
Some people forget that the world can actually see them picking their nose, etc.!

Similarly, being on the phone, especially a mobile phone for some reason, makes you think you've sprouted a soundproof bubble around you.
It does surprise me how much more loudly people talk on their phones than if they're talking to a person who is actually there.
You do go into a sort of 'your own little world' state, where nothing else exists except you and your conversation, and you can stop being aware of your surroundings.

It's one reason why talking on the phone, even with hands-free, and driving at the same time is so dangerous.

When I used to travel by train twice a week, this virtual bubble effect was very apparent when people were on their phones, so I became very conscious of how loudly I spoke to anyone on the phone. During one phone conversation with a friend, she did ask me why I was speaking softly, and I said it was because I was on a train, so she did notice a difference.

Or maybe she has her aircon machine on! (Well, maybe not, if her doors and windows are open!)
When mine's on, I have to turn the TV volume up quite a lot. Luckily it's on the 'detached' side of the house, so hopefully doesn't disturb anyone.

    Edit.
It can be horrible in places like restaurants, especially where there are groups of people.
So many restaurants have a lack of sound-absorbing furnishings, so you find people are talking more and more loudly in order to be heard.
If the whole room could just stop, and then start again at a whisper level, it would be so much nicer. Trying to talk in those circumstances can be almost painful and headache inducing.
It doesn't seem so bad when everyone is in pairs rather than in groups.

Don't eat frozen vegetables .... before you check the list of newly recalled products. Mostly sweetcorn and veg mixes from all the supermarkets. Frozen mixed bags, some tins maybe, some steam pouches. In short: avoid veggies .... I can recommend chips. You don't see chips being recalled do you.

Listeria something or other... gives you the squits and worse :)
