Ooh, you're on form today :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
I have to admit, I've found my Duster far easier to get in and out of in tight spaces than my Merc was, despite them being about the same width, just a different height. The principal difference is that in the Duster you just step down out or up in so don't need to open the door as far as the Merc where you had to unfold yourself whilst standing up or lower and fold yourself up to get into the seat, all whilst between the seat and the door.
I do think that it's somewhat discriminatory that they do provide extra wide spaces, but only for people with an army of sproglets who you just know will run amok once inside the store
I'm sure it is!
But this being the nice people thread I respect their decision to be nice to the sproglets and their mummies.
( I tell lies! I admit it!)

Never having watched Father Ted (don't know why, maybe it clashed with something else), I had to google that!
And came across the Ebbinghaus Illusion.
Obviously, I knew of the illusion, but not Ebbinghaus.
Here's one you can try at home, kiddies.............

Somebody posted a super one on the funny peculiar thread the other day where all the lines crossed at right angles, but you can only see wonky lines crossing at every angle other than 90 degrees.
Until you zoom in really closely.
I'll see if I can find it.(I just lurve spiders!)

It is hard to stop sproglets from opening the door onto any car parked near by - when adults do this in the regular spaces it is because they don't give a fork rather than they just didn't realise....I think....0 -
Oh dear - I fear my PC is now by far the oldest of the NPs - bought second hand about 8 years ago - however it is a bit like triggers broom - it is on its 3rd mobo (although they are all the original spec) it has an uprated processor (although only an and athlon x2 as that is all the mobo can take, the ram is maxed (at 2gb!), there is a nifty 120gb SSD, a decent nidrange pcie graphics card (in came only with built in mobo graphics) 2 2tb sata drives, a sata dvd and a usb/card reader (/floppy drive) on the front. Shame it can't take more ram - I have to restart firefox every hour or so as it seems to be a memory hog/leak.I think....0

That's brilliant, Pastures
I use a laptop which was supplied by DSA (that's Disabled student's Allowance, not the Driving Standards agency!) in 2011. I dread its needing to be replaced, as I know it'll take me ages to get used to any new system and I'll keep thinking I've broken it.0 -
pasturesnew wrote: »day two observations
1/ when i was doing the setup i didn't understand the implications of the "choices" i was making.... I have had the same "pc log on password" for every pc i've owned since the year 2000. While setting this up i had to create a microsoft account and password ... And that is the login to this pc. Now, that's a bit annoying because, you might say, "oh but you can change your password" .... But as it's a password for "my pc at my sofa" it's not so secure as "a password for a microsoft account that you might end up using for all manner of purposes in the coming years"... So that's an annoyance, that there's no "pc user accounts" to login ... Unless i've yet to find them. Instead of "me having a pc that is mine and i can log in and do things", it's more like "turn on this box, connect to the world, then use it" - it all feels a bit more "big brother". I feel more like "now microsoft know when i log into my pc" .... Rather than, as before, "i am logging onto my pc in my house and you know nothing unless i open a browser and go to a site and log on".
settings .... Accounts .... You can set a 4 digit pin for logging on to this particular pc. Is that what you wanted?
You can also set up a local account on the pc, but as you have seen with chrome there are advantages in logging on to big brother, as your settings are available on other computers automatically.
There's also a folder called onedrive. Any files there will automatically be stored in the 'the cloud', which is useful if anything happens to the pc.
2/ i tried to install libreoffice, just because it was on the desktop. It failed, twice... Cba to actually read the reason for failure as, at that point, i wasn't "overly bothered" as i've never used it. Update: I did that again and it's all ok.
3/ when i try to open a .txt file in notepad it's offering me wordpad or libre... So i'll have to choose in the coming week what i want to do. I've always had a habit of creating tiny .txt notepad notes and files all over the place for "quickly write that down and save it" for all manner of minor thoughts/projects and quick reboot situations where i want to save something quickly.
click the start button .... Type note ... Right click notepad, and select pin to taskbar
4/ there's no physical fan in this pc, which has gobsmacked me, having never experienced one without a fan before. I'm banned from taking my laptop to my sibling's because the fan's so noisy! It's so tiny ... I can slide it right out of sight - no more pc on view in the living room, it could even be put into a hollowed out book, on the shelf, making me look like i read
it may overheat if you slide it out of sight without any airflow around it. You could be about to kill the machine. Of course, if you are going to do that, now is the time, before you have too much stuff on it.
5/ i had been adding some passwords to chrome on my old pc without thinking about the implications or what i was doing. One of my tasks was "must get round to working that out, see if i can log into chrome and save those to get them onto the new pc" - because i'd been doing it blindly i hadn't spotted that chrome is part of google and i'm usually/always logged into my account, so all my passwords and bookmarks "appeared by magic" once i was logged onto google on my new pc. That's handyi've been quire staggered at how many passwords i had got in my chrome - well handy.
6/ now it's used to being used and where i go, it's "superfast" compared to the old pc. There's no more waiting, especially on sites such as the dm where they preload all manner of cr4p at you.
7/ evernote - i was expecting to find "download software" as an option - but it only offered an app, which i didn't want.... Then i realised ... It is software, they've just started calling all pc software installations apps instead. How annoying. I dislike the word "app", i prefer to know i am downloading "software". I downloaded that and it installed, i logged in and am now syncing the first of my notebooks held on there.... Started 8.04, 8.54 still syncing. It's a bit of a biggun. I've got four, from memory.
8/ i can finally go through gmail and delete emails i'll never read because my old pc was so slow i stopped trying to do that years agoi had about 70k unreads in there. Now it's just click, click, click, click ... No long waaaaaaaiiiiitttt waaaaaiiiiiit between each click.
9/ first new small adjustment to do: F2 doesn't work on filenames! I've always renamed files by pressing f2, which enables filename edit in directory views etc ... It was just so easy to do that.... Now i have to find if there's a different key to achieve that. I prefer keyboard shortcuts to mouse clicks as my fingers are already on the keyboard, whereas a mouse has to be located, moved, lined up and clicked.
f2 works for me. Are you sure?
[will be continued if/when spotted]
it's all very pleasurable and exciting to use .... And having sound is amazing
it is utterly weird though that it's so completely silent.... It's very strange to not have that constant noisy whirring fan omnipresent.
.............................................................................. .No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
.............................................................................. .
Ah.
I need to think about the whole logging on thing, over time... need to work out what I do want, then make any changes if I deem it necessary.
I would've just ignored onedrive - when things change you stick to what you know .... I'd have never spotted that. That's handy.
Notepad... I think it's time to give it up, still dwelling on that.
Ah, overheating, I hadn't realised it might do that - without a fan I just "assumed" it didn't have to worry about things
F2 - it had started to niggle me and it is on my list to look more closely ... because it appears that the folder I'm using to get to stuff is "Recently Used" - and so I suddenly saw that and thought "Ah, that won't be the original; navigate to the right directory and try again next time you're in that bit". So it probably does. UPDATE: Yes, I tried it in the actual folder and it does still work.
It's just those little "differences" in the main isn't it .... some new stuff, alien stuff, and stuff you've always had.... all splattered across here and there to be discovered and used again, or for the first time.0
