That’s definitely my understanding. The US Society of Actuaries studied mortality in retirement, and
“We found that 12 risk factors were reported on in the literature, and we'll report on them in alphabetical order. The first one is age, then gender, race and ethnicity, education, income, marital status, occupation, religion, health behaviors, smoking, alcohol and obesity.”

Most of those are just the usual suspects, but religion is surprising. It turns out that being religious leads to more social interaction in old age.

    That's a strange alphabet a,g,r,e,e,i,m,o,r,h,s,a,o...:rotfl:

I guess they mean they are in order in the body of the report.

    That doesn't surprise me.

IME if you haven't got many friends, deliberately trying to find and make friends is quite difficult, because it's artificial. OTOH, making friends is easier and more natural if you join something that you show up for regularly, where you keep seeing the same people week on week but when you see them you have something to focus on other than attempting to make friends. All my life, my most successful friendships have been formed like this. Just a few weeks ago I went to the 50th birthday of a friend I made at school because we had to sit at the same tables for lunch for a whole term in our first year at secondary school, and all the other people on our table were already a clique, so we talked to each other.

If you are not someone who naturally seeks to join in with things, it doesn't matter so much during your working life, because there will probably be people at work that you can get to know and become friends with. In retirement, if you're not inclined that way, it's easy to go nowhere and see nobody, but if your beliefs give you a reason to show up every week to the church/synagogue/mosque/temple etc, then you'll not only see people when you get there, but you will quite likely see the same people often enough to form friendships that result in spending time together beyond the time you spend in the group.

The Christmas special about those 4-year-olds and old people showed one of the oldies (David) and one of the children (Eva) visiting another Eva (elderly and isolated, relying on a weekly telephone befriending service for social interaction) to invite her to their concert. Once that had provided the vehicle for making contact, the two older ones were able to embark on a friendship beyond the dictates of the TV programme, but without it they wouldn't have known about each other.

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Also thinking of those we haven't see for a while, especially Nikkster.

Had a great night out last night, not been able to get to a gig since the beginning of September but I was absolutely determined I would make it last night. I'm paying for it today and I have not been able to move from my bed all day as complete exhaustion has hit as a result but to be honest (and carrying on from the theme of previous posts), it is worth it to reconnect with friends and a social life for a brief amount of time. The high (mood wise) it has given me despite the exhaustion is amazing, I don't have that black edge feeling today.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

Rather nice film on at the moment, "The Hundred Foot Journey" with Helen Mirren, about a Michelin starred restaurant in a small town in France facing competition from a newly-opened Indian restaurant opposite.

It's very good, with real French people in it!

    Worth watching on catch-up!

Always think about daisy at this time of year.

Also wonder how chewy's twins are getting on.
