I'm using a windows tablet right now, it has usb ports and an hdmi port so I could plug in a keyboard, mouse and monitor if i wished and it would effectively be a desktop pc.vivatifosi wrote: »I am a bit slower than you, about 94 wpm, but I also touch type. That's why I think you need a keyboard. But if I wanted to, I could pretty much run my business from my tablet.
I use mine for surfing the net, MS Office, watching TV, telephoning people I know, listening to music, reading books and magazines online... there's tons you can do.
As you know I also like genealogy. There's a magazine I like on Genealogy, "Who Do You Think You are" which would cost a fortune to buy each month, but I download mine free of charge from my local library website, flip my tablet round to portrait orientation and read it on that.
However for you usage you would need more ram than I have (2gb) as mine slows down with more than a dozen firefox tabs.I think....0 -
How big are hard drives on tablets then?
This PC has 40GB, which isn't enough - and I'm continually having to run CCleaner to clear everything out (at least once a day) ... and transfer files over to an external HHD, which is annoying if I'm trying to search for "something I know I've got somewhere... but it's probably on the ExtHDD and I CBA to connect that to find it".0 -

That's because there aren't many countries that can't find enough players to make a proper-sized team :rotfl:0 -

Ah, memories of your errant screwdriver made me read that as "CBA to find it to connect it" :rotfl:0 -
Range from 16 or 32 for entry level up to 256+ for the expensive corporate stuff - they are always ssd making performance an order of magnitude better than mechanical drives. However whatever you use you should have a backup either online or on an exteral drive.PasturesNew wrote: »How big are hard drives on tablets then?

Oh almost all have a slot so you can stick a micro sd card in to use as an additional drive, these cost about 30 quid for 128gb.I think....0 -
But it is clearly very, very broken.

Most people have a different definition of broken, it might be on fire but still be reluctant to put the fire out in case it prevents their muddling through.
I only have a 2mb/s adsl but web browsing is normally pretty snappy. I have an i7 laptop witth an ssd though.0 -
I'm beginning to think that you might have left it outside, and someone walked off with it.PasturesNew wrote: »I have a modern little 2-up-2-down, few possessions .... no "furniture/cupboards" to speak of (most things are simply stacked on the floor in the spare bedroom, or on some open shelving in that room, or under the stairs, or on the floor in the living room).... and I've STILL not seen sight of that s0ddin' screwdriver!

PasturesNew wrote: »I think, without experience, ideally, I'd like one wireless box in the corner of the room that held all my files so I could move everything there and keep it there ... with the PC having "the latest" files, but being able to access all other files at the drop of a hat.
e.g. take photos.... if I go somewhere I take photos. I want to keep them in case I want to find one in, say, 3-4-5 years' time for a random reason. So they'd be on the device for up to 3-6 months before I decided "I'll move that folder off here now" - and they could go on the box in the corner.
Then all my files would be in one box, where I could finally sort them out and delete duplicate backups.
I have, in the past, just chucked entire folders over to the ExtHDD to desperately clear space ... so never actually "managed the files", just chucked them over and I suspect there are many duplicates, but don't know what.
I'd like to have one Ext HDD, permanently accessible, where I could set up a proper and sensible directory structure that's more usable.
e.g. I might, mid summer, remove ALL photos from that year directory over to the Ext HDD to free up space, but then continue to use the empty directory to add more photos until the end of the year.
There's been no rhyme reason to any of it - just suddenly "finding the biggest directories taking up space and moving them off the HDD"
Your wireless router supplied by your isp might have a usb socket that you can plug an external hard drive into.
You can normally pick up microsoft office 365 licenses on eBay pretty cheap than these give you 1tb of online storage. It would take you ages to get stuff uploaded but you are then safe whatever happens to your hard drives.I think....0 -

I'd go for something like this. Once Pastures has it it remains free year after year.
Not recommending that particular model, it's just the first one that came up. I have a 4TB one which cost about £100 a few years ago and is largely used for storing photos and work documents, as it's less likely to go missing than my laptop
