I just, forlornly, tested my BB speed.

    1.66Mbps download
    0.35Mbps upload.

    Ouch :(

Would I be correct in thinking that you are quite some way "out in the sticks" and a considerable distance from your exchange?

Or are you on an old broadband (up to 2Mb) package?

I have a routine now though: Request a webpage ... wander off and make a coffee ... come back and see how it's getting on .... get half way through drinking the coffee... and see the webpage :)

    This might help you.

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

If Pastures is out in the sticks, the chances are that she has got glue onto her browser.

I am on an old package... but I think the "faster stuff" is now available - except .... I don't really understand it enough to know how to change, or to work out the difference in price.... and, as my PC is ancient/slow and on its last legs I thought I'd not bother to investigate until I've bought a new PC (which I've been saying I'll do for 7 years).

    That breaks Rule 1.

Rule 1: If it works, do NOT fiddle.... you WILL break it and will have no idea how/why or how to recover.

    :)

Breaking Rule 1 leads to Outcome 1.

Outcome 1: You will cry ... for hours ... and feel very very sad for at least a week.... and have flashbacks to your sadness for months/years.

PN, you may just need a better router.

My iPhone keeled over last night whilst I was trying to upgrade iOS. Should have left it alone. Looked up the error code online and it gave three things to try before contacting Apple. Luckily the third thing worked.

If she's on a 2Mb package a newer router won't improve the speed much from the 1.66Mb she said she gets.

Mind you, the age of the PC could be more of a restriction - web pages nowadays are loaded with images, scripts, etc. so an old PC will take some time to render the page, or might even struggle to do so. A fast PC can do a fair job even with a 2Mb connection although, obviously, it'll do even better with a faster connection.

I don't agree with your rule. I would rather make sure it was robust when I had the time to deal with it, than for it to die on it's own at the most inconvenient time.
