I mean, why is 50% a sad face in summer? I would have thought that meant it would feel dry and comfortable? And in contrast, why would you want 64% to warrant a smile on a damp foggy day?

50% is dry conditions, like a hot desert?

    Don't know why 64% isn't enough for a smile.

It's puzzling. We'd be better off in a dry heat as evaporation would cool us (assuming we're well-hydrated. People cope with desert heat better than jungle heat.
On the other hand, fog isn't warming on a cool day, (though it does imply a lack of wind chill factor).

I have a digital thermometer that also shows humidity. On Summer days the humidity drops below 50% and a sad face appears next to the read out. Today, a damp foggy day, it is showing 64%, but the smile hasn't appeared.

Who's it made by, silvercar? Is it just a general purpose thermometer, or is it associated with some kind of object for which dryness is problematic? Does the smile appear sometimes, at even higher humidity than today?

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

It's only a cheap little thing

Bought because we wanted to know how cold the 'cold room' in the house was at night.

I don't think that has much to do with humidity, not directly at least :rotfl:

I'm here as a disappointed person.

My neighbour, who I thought was moving out .... but "he" was still around ... just seen him AND her + a takeaway dinner + new kids' toys heading into their house.

So no idea what went on or how come I've not seen either of the kids for 10 days now. Maybe they went away, maybe not. Maybe he's just collected them and brought them home. Who knows....

    But they didn't move.

The issue re which way a door is opening comes down to: if you were standing naked in the room at a specific place (e.g. where the bed is) - and if somebody started to open the door and could see in, would they see you naked in the first 1-2" of opening the door, or would they be looking at the wall, giving you a split second extra chance to get covered up or shout.

It's probably more of an "older house" thing when people had servants, so wished to preserve their privacy and be able to see the door opening before somebody could stick their head round the door and see them.

Although I think, in the most part, many people don't think about it when house design is being done ... and only realise the other way would've been better once the door's hung.

I've designed my new shower/loo door with this issue in mind, which way will the door open to afford most privacy ... because it'll be my closest loo to the living room - so I've designed it so the door, when left open, provides the most cover if you're dashing from the living room to the loo in your undies .... as you have to cross in front of the patio door entrance hallway. And if you're in that loo when somebody knocks on the front door and you're in the shower you can open the door and peer through the crack to see who is there and, if it's a friend, hide behind the door and wave/indicate to them "out in a minute, hold on" Which all sounds odd unless you've full knowledge of the house layout/extension and reasoning of it all. :)

The door to my remedial massage therapist's room could do with opening into the room, instead of against the wall as it does, because if you're on the treatment table in your undies and she goes out of the room, anyone who happened to be outside the room would get an eyeful enough to put them off their lunch.:(
