In other other news, I have spent the last week convalescing after a nee nah trip last Friday. Well, I say convalescing, I still went to work Saturday night (quite literally a few hours after being released), Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday but was sensible and swapped my Sunday shift. The sensible advice is normally to take two weeks off work after such an episode but that advice wasn't given because they saw the crutches and chair and automatically assumed I didn't work and I only found out later.
The cause? My chest didn't like a pesky cold I picked up and I had a major asthmatic episode. Still, it appears to be settling now, my peak flows were almost back to normal last night after a week of high dose steroids and maximum strength antibiotics although my chest is still quite, er, chesty (and that's nothing to do with the size!) and I am still absolutely exhausted.
Sorry to hear about your health issues, remember that patience is often important in the healing process. Look after yourself. x100 -
I find it very difficult to not be provocative when I find out that my money has been used to help criminal political organisations reach more people. It makes me very angry. It could instead have been used to improve the quality of life of disabled people or for animal welfare. It could have been used for some positive improvement in the UK rather than free advertising for criminals.
We don't have any choice about what our tv licence fee money is spent on but I don't think most people would be in favour of it being spent on advertising for minority groups of criminals. Why not minority groups of law abiding citizens?
We are all paying for these people to entertain themselves by making other people's lives a misery. We pay for the court cases, we pay for the police etc there are 1000s of better causes that that money could be spent on.
I'm more than happy to discuss this issue nicely, but I do think that we have opposite views on this matter.
I do agree that the demonstrations are causing a heck of a lot of disruption, indeed OH and DS1 missed their train due to the demonstrations, with the new train tickets having to be paid for. It was annoying but really a small issue.
Another friend went to have a look at the demonstrations, and reported back that there was more police officers, then demonstrators.
I am 50, and 30 years ago I went on lots of marches and demonstrations in relation to nuclear weapons, feminist and gay rights. One of my worries about the next generation is that they are so focused on engaging in capitalist goals, that they fail to challenge societies norms. Society changes and develops through challenge, the people most likely to challenge are the young.
The role of media is to provide a balanced view on what is happening, but they fail in this. In particular they do not question why a young person in the riots in London (several years ago) received 10 years in prison for breaking a shop window, whilst someone who abuses children gets 6 months suspended sentence.... it seems a pane of glass is worth more than our children.:(:(
I also have another gripe with the media is that they do not appear to be providing appropriate coverage of Hong Kong social unrest (which is ongoing - I cannot remember the last time I saw this on the news), and have given absolutely no coverage to what China has done in several countries including Myanmar and Vietnam (which has caused an increase in people seeking political asylum in the UK from these countries).:(:(

You need a chocolate, crisps and burgers scoffathon
Or similar goodies of your own choosing.
The weather's turned....
It'll be Xmas soon and people will be thinking about cutting back on gratuitous scoffery, so now's a good time to pack some in before it's time to "act/sound all virtuous and goody goody"
I have now eaten 2 packs from the large 12/multi-pack of crisps0 -

Can someone explain this one to me please:
I went to the bakers to ask for a birthday cake. An 8" cake is £22, decorated. That's for the usual sponge sliced in half with a splodge of cream and jam down the middle. Fair enough. It's a lot of work to make that.
"But, we'd prefer a fruit cake, please," I said. And, the price goes up to £70.
I tried another baker, and they want £22 for the sponge, or £55 for the fruit cake.
I bought the ingredients and baked a very nice 8" fruit cake. The ingredients cost well under £10. The decoration looks decidedly home made, but the cake looks professional.
So, why is there such a big cost difference between the two types of cake at the bakers? No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

I bet the ingredients for the sponge cake are less than £1.... I am sure they figure out the costs of making it (ingredients for the cake and decoration, time of staff, and business costs) and times this by a common denominator to get the price.
Well done on making it x100 -
Well done for making it, GDB, though it's a shame you had to. Well, I suppose you didn't have to, but it was the sensible thing! Whose birthday?
I suppose part of the extra cost at the bakery might be that they can say "Look, we've made you this lovely cake that will keep for ages in an airtight container, and can even be sent through the post!"
Sue I'm so sorry to hear about your asthma attack! Very glad to know you're on the mend. Take care xx0 -

It’s for a 90th birthday! I don’t think I will be as fit as him, even assuming that I make it to the same age.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
There is a really bad virus going round. I have it. It starts like a mild cold on the first day and then rapidly progresses to the kind of cold where your nose drips continuously even after you have taken cold remedies. I couldn't get warm enough and I had a bad cough. That went on for several days and then I had a hospital appointment to get some results on Thursday I then got the next part of the virus which was vomiting and diarrhoea. I am now at what I hope is the final stage which is where I have a cough that makes me sound as if I have been a heavy smoker all my life. I have had this for virus for around a week now. It isn't a normal cold. I hope that other people with health problems don't get it.
I have found in the past that when I am not feeling very well I can't cope with problem people. I think this is probably because having been brought up by someone with narcissistic personality disorder I have to spend a lot of energy normally protecting myself from the knowledge of the actions of people who have the symptoms of this disorder. I generally feel that having had 18 years when I couldn't escape from it I shouldn't have to deal with it anywhere else in my life. For some reason this week I have been getting more memories from my childhood than I normally do. Something has set this off. It could be the stress of knowing that where I live we are part way through a month of fireworks going off every night for several hours somewhere in the neighbourhood. The firework problem started around last weekend and will go on until about 2 weeks after Guy Fawkes night. It usually lasts for about a month now. The fireworks are all of the kind that have loud bangers in them and I can always hear them inside the house even though we have double glazing. The fireworks are a known problem where I live and have been getting worse and worse over the years. They are going on for more weeks and more hours in the day they are also getting louder as people buy the ones which make the most noise. We can be subjected to several hours of random loud banging noises every night for about a month.
I have no idea how people with ASD cope with this level of noise in my area. Including the disabled adults who live in the supported housing at the bottom of my road.
Sorry if people think that I had a rant on purpose.0 -
We also have firework season that extends for weeks. I don't really have a problem with it, though I see on Facebook that those with pets are majorly stressed. I'm personally more bothered by the halloween adults banging on doors.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
