I am surprised that so many banks still use card readers. I always considered HSBC to be behind the curve but it seems not. A phone banking app that doubles as security codes, as now the standard on HSBC, seems the most ideal way.Eco Miser

And it's a lot less clunky than the card reader thing. No physical card is required.
Interesting the trends on security though. My Atom account uses three methods, PIN, photo and voice. Barclays is now voice operatedi understand. Even Talktalk are voice recognition.0 -

With regards to Nationwide, it can vary widely. Sometimes they ask for the card reader for existing payees (including to my own FlexDirect account), even occassionally for downloading a PDF credit card statement.
This is often the case when making a unusual large sum pf payment to an existing payee based on my personal experience as well.
Let say you normally make a payment of a few hundred and suddenly the payment is £20,000 it is not uncommon they will ask you to use the card reader.
But I think that is what the algorithm should be checking as a double measure to protect the account. If not I even questioning the security measure of this bank as it might be someone else in your house pressing the button for you while you are not aware of.0 -

Has anyone complained about the hard credit check?
I just did so online, making it quite clear I want the search removed from my file!
Anyone else done this? MSE blog says some have been successful...
Wouldn't mind so much except this bunch of incompetents took so so long (5 weeks) to even get my account open and provide the tools to access it that this is a final blow after all that!0 -
Just checked my MSE Credit Club (Experien) rating. A tad boring. 999/999. RBS made a gentle enquiry prior to my signing up for the Ulster Bank savings account. Yawn, credit rating still 999/999. Would be more tragic if I had reason to phone 999. All going well with Ulster Bank. Good, easy to navigate website, very fast payments in and out. Have only needed to use the card reader once for a test payment. Had to be careful not to enter 999 :T0

Opening this savings account is an absolute joke. After faffing around with numerous letters, emails and texts for the past 6 weeks, I finally get the PIN for the card reader today.
The only trouble is the PIN does not work!
So after a long phone call a new card and PIN will be with me in 7-10 days time.0 -
This mob are a joke. Having waited 4 weeks for Card Reader then Card and today the pin I find that the pin does not work with the card reader. Have written to them to close account0
