  • The IMF sees trouble ahead for the EU:
Emerging Europe is facing increasing economic stresses that threaten to unwind some of the political progress made over the of past decades, a top International Monetary Fund official said on Tuesday.
On a political note, Thomsen pointed to increased tensions between some of the EU's eastern members and the European Commission as a key concern.

So trade deals post-Brexit must deliver this or they are a failure in his/her eyes, yet his/her pro-EU stance is the exact opposite of this allegedly preferred outcome. Thus placing conditions on the post-Brexit UK that he/she would not place on a UK within the EU as we already know what that looks like.

I thought one of the main Brexiteering points (it's every other Conrad post) is about how we're doomed because we have a trade deficit, and that Brexit would allow us to move towards a surplus. Which is what gfplus is saying?

Or do you think that running a surplus is ok? I don't really know.

Him having a stricter notion of what counts as a success is bias? Maybe. Why shouldn't we be holding our ruling class to the highest standards?
On the topic of trade, I'm pretty sure I've previously addressed this also in previous posts on the "What happens" brexit thread. What in particular would you like me to answer?

I thought it was pretty clear. Free trade deal with the US; What do we hope to gain?

So? The IMF also sees trouble for the UK. S&P also see troubles for the UK. Actually pretty much every business sees trouble for the UK.
    What's your point?

    I heard that live. 😁
I like James O'Brien, but he does like to find an idiot when his argument is falling down I've noticed. You would argue that there's plenty of choice of course. 😎

Estimate. I'll try and bash together some better numbers later. How much do you think the EU has spent on Brexit? The extra summits, reviews, studies, flights, hotel stays, admin, printing? They've presumably had people working on this stuff for over a year now.

As a direct comparison. How much has the EU spent on road projects that haven't even been finished? When I've driven around Spain I'm gobsmacked by the sheer extent of the waste. Not least the elevated sections in the Northern Part of Spain in the mountains.

But isn't that the same everywhere for pretty much everything? You don't even have to go to Spain to see that waste... take a walk in any local UK town and you'll see the same!

  • Danish MEP Morten Messerscmidt wants Denmark out of the EU and wants to co-operate with the UK, Norway, Switzerland "and other countries as an alternative to the EU".
Do you hope that Denmark will say goodbye to the EU at the time and enter into a new free trade cooperation?

"Yes, of course, the EU has nothing to do with free trade. It's a customs union, as soon as everything is regulated far from the parliament." The parliament is demolished into a stamp office that does not dare and can not object. "I can not See that it can be made worse than it is today in the EU. "

Very entertaining. HP Foods Ltd haven't been British for decades. After Imperial sold them to Danone, they were then sold to Heinz who are American. You'll be telling us next that Yorkshire Tea doesn,t come from Yorkshire.

It,s amazing how much hope is pinned on free trade deals. They are very desirable in the sense that two countries agree to drop tariffs on each others' products. Unless you happen to be the EU which loudly proclaimed last week that it had signed a trade deal with the Japanese. It hadn't. It had merely come to an agreement in principle about a possible trade deal which is at least a couple of years away and is already running into difficulty about tariffs on Camembert cheese of all things. The two countries then have to draw up schedules of thousands of products and agree on which are tariff free (free trade) and which are not (not free trade). Then both sides will play fast and loose with the agreement - the Japanese in particular who will find all kinds of reasons not to import particular products because they are even more protectionist than the EU and simply want tariff free access to the EU.

The benefit to the UK of a free trade deal with the EU would be no single market, no free movement, no payment of billions a year to them and no ECJ jurisdiction. If the EU want it.

    Thank you.
You have just illustrated how difficult it is to get a NEW free trade deal over the finishing line.
This is where there will be trouble for Britain getting new deals done. They could be years away while imports and exports with the EU 27 will not be frictionless.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.
